This is weird. It is 5:30 eastern time and I have Comcast. I just plugged
in my DVI cable and notice the color changing from red to green and back
(just a subtle change, but noticeable). Thinking it was the TV I changed
channels and this is NOT happening on SD channels. I switched from
component video and the colors again change, but only on the HD channels
(even if the show is NOT in HD). Now, on the HD channel I switch from
regular cable to component to DVI, the regular cable color is fine.
Has this happened to anyone else, and what could it be?

When I 'activated' my DVI cable last Nov.
on Time Warner Cable..... My HD channels were
a little slower to switch both mode & Channel...
SA3250HD Cable Box & Sony 34HS510 HD set used
a 2 or 3 second time delay to both figure out and
post on the TV screen 1080i or 720p or
a 'bad' guess like 480p.....
I has to program the SA3250HD Cable box for 6 of
6 options that my Sony accepts: Box default is 1080i...

Turns out when I watch an HD channel (whether it's an HD or sd broadcast)
and have the video mode on component video OR DVI, I get this scrolling line
from right to left that changes the color every so slightly. If I am on an
SD channel and have video on component or DVI video, it does NOT happen.
I have to get a cable tech out here.

You wouldn't happen to be watching a Sony XBR or HS series HDTV would

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is EXACTLY what I'm going
through.
Dennis, have you experience this? I read the messages about the "fix"
but did not find out how to get the tv into service mode. Please
advise if you can. Otherwise I will call Sony and try to get past Max

Eddie, I know about it because my 3 week old 34hs510 is doing the same
thing. Mine was mfg. in July 2003. There is a fix for it by going into
the service menu, which is something I am not comfortable doing. Some
have noted a _slight_ softning of the picture once all the changes in
the service menu are completed, others have noted no change to an
improvement of sorts. I am trying to decide if I can live with it or
chance a menu change and risking losing that visual _pop_ as someone
said that a great HDTV gives one. Oh well, I need to call Sony and
just get it done by a proper tech I guess.
Did you follow the thread all the way to the end? There are two years
of posts on this problem.
I probably spent 5+ hours over a span of a year at different stores
looking at the 510, 800 and finally the 910. Never saw the "scrolling
bar", so don't feel bad- he said after spending $1500+ on a much
awaited tv. <sigh>

I would definitely leave adjustments in the service menu to a VERY
experienced Sony technician. If you happen to mess up the wrong adjustments
you can actually do damage to the set. Also, the problem that you describe
might require parts to be replaced. The procedure supplied by Sony needs to
be well understood for diagnosing and correcting the problem.

Keith,
I did the fix via the service menu. My set was made Jan. 2004 so I
figured it is NOT the "b" board. The fix was very easy to do...with
the tv off, press on the remote "display, 5, vol +, power". Press the
"4" until "hdpt" is in the upper left of the screen and press "6" to
change the "1" to a "0". Then press "mute, enter", turn off the tv,
then when you turn the tv back on it will be fixed. This is hard to
mess up because you are only changing 1 thing, and you can always
change it back if you want.
I did NOT notice any change in the screen quality, and still have the
visual "pop". Again, if you don't like it, change it back. You can't
mess it up if you follow the directions EXACTLY.

No problem as long as you pay attention to what you are doing and, like you
said, follow the steps exactly. We have seen people reset the EEPROM an
corrupt the data in ways that make it very difficult to get the set to start
up again. You have to change the EEPROM and reset everything.

You say "we". Are you a Sony service tech? Does what I did void the
warranty? I have no idea what EEPROM even is, let alone mess with it. Not
that I would do this, but people mentioned a "red push". I assumed this
meant the "tint" setting, but apparently not.
Archived from groups: alt.tv.tech.hdtv (More info?)
The company I work for is a self servicing dealer and ASC for Sony. Whether
you voided the warranty or not depends on what you did and what problem you
report. If you change settings in the service mode that cause a problem,
then you may not get it fixed under warranty. If you ever have the set
serviced under warranty, I would put the settings back to the original
values.
Generally, as I said, it is best to stay out of the service menu unless you
are very comfortable with what you are doing and know the system well.
Tech's sharing stories frequently talk about how the business of
"decalibration" is brisk.
In your case, I wonder why you did not have the service performed under
warranty. Did you at least know what to look for to verify that the B board
was the updated version?

I checked the date that the TV was manufactured and it was made in Jan.
2004. The defective B boards were on sets made at the end of 2002. As for
having a Sony tech look at it, they do not make house calls and I have no
way of getting the TV to a service center. And it seemed like an easy
enough fix for me to do myself.

You might check your warranty. I thought it covered in-home (or pickup)
service for that size. Frankly, I never paid much attention, we just
automatically treat any set that size as such for warranty repairs.
I also learned a long time ago that manufacture dates and serial numbers
don't always tell the whole story. I have seen wrong info from
manufacturers more than a few times. I'd always check the board to be sure
it is the updated version.

Thank, Leonard. How do I check the board? I mean, is the info I want

B board.
