I am a Voom subscriber and I wonder what kind of HD olympic coverage I will
get. I get BRAVO(HD), which has some relationship with NBC so I think there
is a chance I will get some olympic coverage. Any comments? By the way,
Voom is incredible!

Thanks,
--Dan

Some 400 hours of the Olympic coverage is supposed to be HD, not all.
Swimming, diving, gymnastics, track & field will get the bulk of the HD
coverage which will be repeated. See
http://www.nbcolympics.com/wnbc/5016947/detail.html for info, which I
found with a quick search.

Just as a sidenote, I was just in Greece the past week and met the NBC
producer for weightlifting. He told me that the Atlanta Olympics in
1996 had 200 hours of coverage. The 2000 Olympics in Sydney had 70
hours of coverage. THis year in Greece they are catering to the
Olympic viewer so there is going to be over 1200 hours of coverage.
Bravo, USA, MSNBC, and NBC are going to have massive coverage of all
the events. So if you are into fencing or badmintion, you are in luck
this year. I don't know about the HD hours but just seeing that much
sports will be great.

taken from directv.com Watch nearly 400 hours of NBC's high-definition
coverage of the Athens Games.

Feel the pride and glory of the Olympics in sharp detail, bright color and
crisp sound with eight hours of Olympic highlights each day. This is your
chance to get as close to the athletes and the games without actually being
there.

Eligible customers can catch all the action on DIRECTV® HD channel 84, August
13-30.

This is great news for DirecTV subscribers and I'm happy for those who
don't have access to HDTV from their local NBC affiliate. I wonder
sometimes though, if the impression isn't left to the casual observer
that this is some satellite TV only option. In fact where I live and
many other places anyone with an antenna has the option of watching
all this HDTV Olympic coverage for free. Again, I don't want to take
anything away from satellite or cable viewers but just want to include
the point explicitly that if your local NBC affiliate has its HDTV
digital transmission capability on the air (which they do in many
markets) you have the option of watching all this coverage without
paying a subscription fee.

HI Def coverage of the Olympics on Direct TV is RESTRICTED TO THOSE who live
in a market with an NBC OnO station.

A widescreen edition of a movie presents the film frame as it was seen in
the movie theater. This is the version that best preserves the filmmaker's
original intent.

End of story!

Perhaps.....but that is a totally arbitrary and discriminatory policy
restricting HD to only those served by O & O's.
Sooner or later, someone will probably file suit in federal court against
the FCC to have it set aside.

You gotta look at the reason it's restricted to O&O's. If NBC allowed Direct
TV to broadcast NBC programming in markets with "paying" affiliates the
affiliates would scream bloody murder as it bypasses all of their local
advertising revenue that is based in part upon the Direct TV NBC viewers.
There would be no issue if Direct TV were carrying the affiliates HD feed.

ONLY if you're in an area with an NBC OnO.
(Your local NBC affilate is OWNED by NBC.)
