X800XL Artifacts at 75C?

I was messing around with Pain Killer the other night, and after about 30 min of play, I got checker board like artifacts. I quit, and checked my temps, and it was around 75C. I had my fan controls set to go to 100% at 70C, but some how it was set back at the default settings. After fixing that, my temps went down, but I had to reboot to get rid of the artifacts.

I did get similar artifacts during an OC (not trying a massive OC, this was little by little) when the temps got to 74-75C, so I stop trying that.

I know that X800XLs aren't very good OCers. But 75C seems a bit low to be seeing artifacts. Am I wrong?

Was getting artifacts on my x850XT at ~50'c, and my x850 pro at around 60'c. Both sent back with broken RAM, both agreed that the RAM had fried, and I didn't over clock either. And on both cards seemed like the thermal sensor was naffed as the fan sat at idle at all times.

Don't think I'll use an ATI for a while.

RMA it, with Screen Shots. Sounds wayyyyy too hot for my liking, hoping you have a fan or two in your case.

It very well could be the memory that is causing the artifacts, and you cant see the temps of the memory.

Leave the core clock where it is and drop the memory 35-50mhz. See if that helps.

yikes... if you cannot return it... get an aftermarket cooler

I am using Arctic Cooler 4 Rev. 2 and it idles now 28-30 and loads 55-65 as before if would idle at 40C and load at 75-80

Thanks, that's what I thought. :) This has happened before (with a slight OC), and the card still continues to work, so I figured it must a memory problem.

To Trinitron: I'm on auto reply for after market cooling on newegg. Gonna get me something nice.

I have an old MX4000 and (dont remember stock speeds) but I oced it for a few months of light use and when I started getting artifacting I had to drop back to stock. Few months later it was artifacting at stock. Ended up dropping the memory 15mhz and was able to put the core back up the 65-70mhz that I had when oced and it still runs like a champ.

I'm going to be recieveing a Zalman VF900 for my X850XT next weekend, and I will be reviewing it.
IF you want to wait.
As far as x850's go, i've heard of them getting up to 110degC b4, but then again, different card.

I have a VF700AlCu that I picked up for $6 (long story) and I love it. They can be found fairly cheap and mine is literally dead silent and cools very very well.

exactly. good advice. a lot of people forget about memory temperatures. artifacting is usually a property of memory and not the core.

Thanks, I've noticed that also.

OP: Not sure what your case airflow situation is but you can easily prop an 80mm fan at 5 or 7v and give the card a little breath of fresh air. Memory usually only needs a slight breeze to keep cool.

Doh! Didn't even think about that. It still works, but I'm sure I'll still have heat issues in the future without some aftermarket cooling. Doesn't take much to get the card to 75C. I've still got 4-5 months left on the warranty, so I'll most likely RMA it.

I experienced a couple system reboots while playing 3d shooters with my X800XL, and removing the side panel of my computer has fixed the problem. The card idles at 45 (I keep fan speeds low) and loads at 60-70 C. Can't say I see artifacts.

Typically that's where I'm at. When it does go higher (which it did playing Painkiller of all things the other day) I don't see artifacts until it reaches 75C. 75C is still too low for my tastes to be seeing artifacts, so I might RMA it since it's still under warranty.
