Which Job?

I have a choice of assignments in Nanchang, China or Ulsan, Korea next year.

I have no idea which to pick. They are similar jobs, but the China job may be slightly easier.

I know nothing about either culture. I'm just a hick from Michigan.

I was based in Hong Kong until quite recently and have travelled a lot around China. However I have never been to Korea, so I can't made a fully educated comment on that.

I would gravitate towards China, but only just. If you were based in Beijing or Shanghai I would be a lot more positive, but as you'd be in a regional city your life would be less easy. I'm assuming you don't speak Mandarin, so you'd need to depend more on the expat community and facilities for them, which are limited in smaller cities. Also travel can be tedious as we're talking about major distances between locations. Expats earn a fortune compared to locals and you'd be loved by Chinese chicks interested in your passport but disliked by the population in general (they call westerners Gwailos, meaning 'white devils').

I think both Korea and China carry a fair amount of kudos in terms of your career profile. I'd be a bit concerned about political stability in Korea but otherwise my only consideration is the state of development in Korea.

Honestly, it's about 50/50 with a slight leaning towards China. I'm sorry if this is not very helpful but let me know if you have any specific questions.

Try living in that region and then make an educated comment instead of what you read in the papers.

Just curious. How did you get assigned overseas?

I work for a machine builder. I go with the machines to the customer's plant, get them producing good parts, then train their operators to run them.

You mean you don't like your job? I dunno, I always liked it when I got to travel, even if the job sucked :) But i've never been paid for international travel.

Have you been there?

This machine is going to Hyundai. They have something called "The Hyundai Foreigners Compound". It looks like a haven for Americans (and others) in an unknown land. I will have to check it out.

Most of the time I like it. The travel part is a bonus, usually. But I don't want to get stuck there for too long.

I suppose that could suck. I dunno. I just feel that I should be traveling now, before I get a family and all htat junk.
