If a video card has no plug like the 2x3 or 2x4 or dual 2x3's where does the power come from? the Pci-x16 slot? Excuse my noobieness.

Yes, the power comes in over the PCI-x16 slot. All graphics cards receive some power over the pci express slot. For most modern cards designed for gaming, the pci interface cant supply nearly enough power, and thats where you see additional power connectors.

PCIe 16x ver 1.1 supplies 75W, ver 2.0 will be 150W.
The 6pin connectors are also 75W.
AGP was 25-35W max depending on the board specs.
AGP PRO was 50W and 110W.

PCI-e v2 will be nice, only the biggest power hogging cards would need a connector, and then they'd probably only need 1, unless it used like 300W of power. 8O

is the 7600gt and x1650xt the fastest card without needing power cable?

I use a 7600GS (not even the Gt and it uses extra power. Otoh it's agp so it gets less from the mobo...

Yes the PCI-E slot supplies about 70-75 watts of power. Some video cards though require 85-90watts of power, hence the reason you need an extra power connection, because the 75watts or so from the PCI-E slot just is not enough. But if the card you have does not have an extra spot for power to be plugged into, then I would have to say that the extra power is not necesaary as the PCI-E slot supplies enough.

Bothe the 7600gt and the x1650xt bothe require and extra power lead plugged into them.Without the extra power, neither card would run properly,if at all.

7600GT doesn't require an extra plug does it ?
March 6, 2007 8:49:23 AM

As fas as I'm concerned if you don't plug it in it won't work at all...

Mine doesn't have anyplace to plug in extra power but I only get 114 fps in Doom3 Demo1 so it must not be running properly if at all. :(

the x1650xt doesn't need one either, i bought one and it runs perfectly,it didn't have a plug, i don't know what your talking about

Things to bear in mind other than the GPU on the card are the amount and type of memory and also the cooling solution used.

I have two old AGP 9700 pro cards in the drawer - one has 128mb and one 256mb - the lower mem card has passive cooling and the higher mem card has active. Only one of them has a power connector - no prizes for guessing which one.

Active cooling,(the fan sounds like a jet engine the first 4 seconds after you turn it on but I've never heard it kick in after some *very* intense gaming), and 256M GDDR3 on my BFG7600GTOC that requires no secondary power.
