It was the first time I overclocked a GPU. I read some article on the Internet that said the 8800 GTS can do 620 gpu 950 memory easy so that's what I tried. And it worked for me.

I don't remember the temp...I think it was only about 10 deg farh higher than non-OC.

I only overclock for games the require it: R6 Vegas .

My stock is 513/793 MHz, idle 67 degtees, loaded around 80-82...
Wonder how far could I go...

Reply to TheProfiler

overclock in sig, loaded runs at 76-80 idle 60-62

Reply to core2

Overclocked as signature shows. Idle 49, load 65.

Sorry to slightly derail this, but what program are you using to monitor the temps of your card? I didn't get anything with the driver package and programs such as speedfan don't pick it up.

Thanks.

I'm, using DigiCell, excellent program from the MSI (they made my mobo). NTune also.
These are all nice clocks, what programs are you guys using? Ntune is great, but I can't save changes. I'd have to clock every time I reboot. Unbelievable...

I use ATI Tool and is great for OC. I even have an OC profile according to the application. For example, in 2D (like now) I run @ default speed, but in games I run at the speed showed here. It saves your OC profiles when you reboot. Is a highly configurable, small program.

ATI tool? For NVidia card?

It works perfectly

Plguzman, are you using watercooling?

65deg overclocked seems quite low. Don't they run higher than that at stock speeds?

Reply to stefx

MIne ran 62/81 degrees stock, before i got new case with 4 (read:four) fans. Now it's 50/70 degrees, still stock. When I OC it'll probably go over 85 full load. Maybe even 90.

Reply to TheProfiler

Nope, stock cooling. Fan @ 100% using Rivatuner, and a PCI blower under the card.

Reply to plguzman

Nope. Overclocking is bad. I would never do that!

Just check my sig...

Edit* Oh yeah temps... usually around 65/74 idle/load overclocked. I am using ATI tool.

You must have a silent case then (or maybe your PC isn't right next to you?), because when I jacked my GPU fan to 100%, it sounded like a friggin' jet aircraft taking off!

I am so wanting to find a water-cooling setup for my GTS (such as what is available for the GTX); if I cannot find something, then I am going to "dump" the GTS to my wife's system and get the WC'd GTX!

Yeah right!

Why would a watercooler work for the GTX but not the GTS? Aren't they physically pretty much the same?

Haha, yes my case is silent, and I have it under the desk and the noise doesn't bother me (this level of noise I mean). The fan for the Tuniq is noisier than the 8800 fan, I can tell you (I have the Tuniq fan always @ 100% too). When you have a E6600 OCed to 3.6 need all the air you can get. I prefer cooler components than silent components, anyway, my apartment has a fountain outside my window, all i hear is the fountain

About the cooler, I concur with Stefx, the GTX and the GTS have the same core, so probably the same WC block works for both. The memory is different tho.

The water coolers are different between the GTX and GTS models. The placement of the memory chips as well as the PCI-E controller (which are all cooled by the stock cooler as well) are in different ares as well as the screw patterns to hold the cards on. You can see this on the koolance water cooler kits for those two cards (GTS http://www.koolance.com/shop/produ [...] 7ef45d2ad9 And GTX http://www.koolance.com/shop/produ [...] 7ef45d2ad9 )

Hmm, maybe I should just turn up the volume on the TV then? :)

I once had one of those desktop fontains that one can find at a Lowes or Home Depot, but one, a former cat we owned kept playing in it, and two, the water would splash on my desk. Not cool.

And as some have already pointed out, there are some significant differences in the builds between a GTX and GTS.

Now where is that article where THG cooled a PC using vegetable oil? :)

read my sig. about 50C

My OC: Stable

700/1980

However, I get no performace boost in 3dmark06 (stops at 50fps)

53/68c (35 degrees in my room)

Reply to CompTIA_Rep

it's 35degrees in your room!!!!!! Do you live in a desert or something?

Reply to stefx

Yes New Mexico. It gets below freezing at night, and since I keep the windows open, it just about equalizes... I love it.

Anyway, I lied, Looks like my STABLE OC is:

652/1814 (have not tried going higher yet) TEMP 62 after 3d06

I do expect my 3d06 marks to be higher though: 7132

Specs:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
Sys 2048 MB (55510 6400)
Disk: 476.94 GB
Mobo 965P-S3

You guys think that is ok? I was expecting close to 9000.

I scored 10660 in 3DMark06 with my current settings, so I think you should score higher than that, even with the CPU @ stock speed. I would try to OC it, because you have almost the same MOBO as me (you have the S version) and you maybe could reach 3.0Ghz even with stock voltage. What's your PSU?

Reply to plguzman

I assume that the 36amps are for the 12V rails. If its this way, that PSU is enough for your configuration tightly, but enough. It may be a software problem (drivers for example). Did you make a fresh Windows installation when you upgraded to the 8800GTS?.

It happened to me before (with an AGP card), that I installed a X800XT after a Nvidia 6800, and the 800XT was giving me AWFUL scores in 3dmark. Only after I format the disk and reinstalled windows, the card started working as expected.

I'm running a GTS overclocked to 630/950 and an E6600 running on a 350Mhz FSB and I get about 10700 in 3dMark '06.

Sounds like all is not well there!

New OC: 4500/7000

New score: 55,593

There much beter.

Then I guess you need a new card, because that one is fried now

Temps before death? 460C idle, 600C load. :P

Reply to plguzman

No I stuck 155 heat sync's on the card. Temps were 55c and 76c. Not bad.
