I don't know if I am in the right place, but I need help troubleshooting an error that I keep getting on my computer. It is a stop error that says my computer has recovered from a serious problem that is typically caused by a device driver that is not correct for XP. The computer will just suddenly restart itself. I don't get the blue screen of death. The error message comes up after the computer has booted up again. Any ideas where to start? The stop error occurs most often when my anti-virus software is scanning, but it also happens out of the blue at other times. Thanks for your time.

This usuallt happens when hardware is conflicting with the os in some way. Also it might be that when you first installed the os that it didnt install it in the right way (missing system files, dll, etc).

Do a repair with you XP cd or a fresh install. Disable in bios anthing that you dont use ex. onboard 1394, onboard audio, sata controler, etc.
