Basically, how much to brands matter, and which is best out of these?
Gigabyte GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB PCI-E, $569.00
XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB PCI-E, $572.63
Inno3D Geforce 8800GTS 320M PCI-E, $553.01
All prices NZD, after GST

I'm guessing the XFX. Am I right? And is it worth the price difference?

For any Americans, approx. 1.4xxx NZD = 1 USD around now.

So the 19 NZD between the XFX and the Inno3D is (very roughly 12 USD)

Actually, to elaborate a bit, it depends on various factors many of which are subjective. For example, clock speeds, bundled software (if any), warranties, technical support etc.

I would suggest to ask around about the experience other users have had with these brands. My recommendation of the XFX was based primarily on that. Otherwise, all things being equal, I would go for the one with the best warranty. Not only are you covered but it also suggests that the manufacturer is confident about the quality of their product.

To me factory OC'ing + warranty is more important then price.
Is the XFX overclocked?
They have some models that are and still have great warranty, otherwise cheaper is always good =)

About the OCing I dont think it's something to take into acount because almsot alll GTS will reach 625+ core and 2ghz ram so that's not an issue.

For the 20$ extra, you get the double life time of XFX which is great if you are the kind of guy who sales old hardware to buy newer on. Other then that not much difference.

Sorry i fail to see how a factory OC'ed card with warranty is not an factor vs a cheaper card that warranty has been voided cause you OC'ed it your self?
Or does every company allow OC'ing of their products?

Ta guys I'll look into that.

If I buy an EVGA 8800GTS 640MB and within 3 months I decide to use their step-up program, will they know if I have overclocked it or not?

In other words, once you overclock this vid card, is there a trail, a switch, an indicator of some kind?

Thanks

XFX double lifetime warranty.

You get lifetime. If you sell, the next person to own it does.

Just make sure to register.

EVGA's warranty covers overclocking, so they wouldnt care. You can confirm this by visiting their forums. I stepped up my OC'd 7950GX2 with no problems. 8)

But these are the cards we are talking about...

Just go for the Cheaper one unless it has a bad warrenty.

Does that apply to anyone, anywhere? (Outside of the US?). Sounds like registering is worth it...

One of the other two, I couldn't find any details on, and the other had a 3 year warranty.

Reply to egel

I think only in the US. Check their website.

As far as the 3 year warranty goes... I don't know your habits but usually in the world of graphics cards, 3 years is a long time to hold on to a card so that warranty should be enough

Reply to Primitivus

Yeah I know: 3 years, or even 2 should be enough, except if I sell it, the buyer won't be covered (if the warranty agreement supports reselling anyway that is).

Which brand is likely to last longest?

Dude, I hope thats a typo. An 8800GTS doesn't cost that much. Those prices reflect the current GTX. Find someplace else to shop.

Swifty as he stated he is from New Zealand. And prices are NZD! And yeh he still pays more then in the USA. Such is the world. Electronics in many countries are heavily taxed.

I vote XFX if warrenties pan out

In two years, if it breaks, you will be able to buy something of similar performance for approx 50$ or less

Reply to stefx

But would he want something of similar performance in 2 years?

Reply to Primitivus

Go for the XFX version worth the little bit more inmy opinion

Agreed. I was just pointing out that the value of a lifetime or even 2+ years warranty is very low.

Reply to stefx

Agreed as well.
However, many people (myself included) have a second PC made up of older parts. So a card bought today may not be very good for gaming 2-3 years down the line but it would be ideal for a spare/backup system and the lengthy warranty offered by some brands would come in handy.

Reply to Primitivus

Finding a warranty that is longer than 2 or 3 years in NZ is pretty hard, they're all lifetime in america, and 2 or 3 here, although evga and someone else supposedly offer 10 year warranties in europe, I can't find any mention of what applies anywhere else.

But yeah, 2 or 3 years time this card will be obsolete, and I could get or similar for a very low price. Not that I'd want to in 2 or 3 years time.

As the warranies appear similar, I think I'll take the XFX, unless there is anyreason anyone thinks I should not.

NZ's government taxes heavily on technology, those prices are NZD NOT USD, and a GTX is around $1000 NZD. Those were also some of the cheapest prices; GTS 320's go up about another $150NZD if you shop in the wrong places.

Reply to egel

Australia's not much better a 640MBGTS can be had for about $600 at one or two places most are closer to $700 though and a GTX is $900-$1200 depending onbrand and store.
