IMO, on a display such as a CRT (FP or RPTV)
capable of 1080i, 720p should look noticeably
better converted to 1080i than 480p. You'd be
getting considerably more scan lines with
1080i, each carrying 720p's max resolution
converted to 1920X1080.
On some fixed-pixel displays with limited
matrix formats, the difference may be less
noticeable. 720p sideconverted to 1080i looks
quite good on my CRT-based RPTV, especially
with live 720p sporting events. Most viewers
with sets capable of either 720p or 1080i
(often CRT front projectors) say 720p looks
only slightly better in its native format
than sideconverted to 1080i.

It's a little hard for me to tell, since my sat receiver doesn't actually
do 720p (the earlier versions did), but converts to 1080i or 480p. I
suppose I could experiment with setting the output to 480p on an ABC HD
broadcast....
At first guess, I'd think it would be about twice as good in 1080i. That's
basically the same difference as between a good progressive scan DVD and
1080i.
And twice as good is not as dramatic as you might think. To get a REALLY
dramatic increase you need about a factor of 4. Of course the difference
between SDTV and HDTV is normally a bit more even than that!

Experimenting with my Pace DC550P STB and a CRT HDTV, I found 720p to look
best when converted to 1080i.
(Regular 480i channels, however, look horrible converted to 1080i --
otherwise I'd just keep the STB set at 1080i.)

It depends on what's doing the conversion and what device is displaying the
picture. Both formats were designed to minimize the issues with
up-converting from 480i/p or cross-converting between HD formats. On my
equipment, 720p converted to 1080i looks MUCH better than 720p converted to
480p. YMMV.

How long is a piece of string?

These questions are not easy to answer because, in the real world, not all
hardware provides the same results. In theory a 720p "upconverted" to 1080i
should look better on a proper display if the upconversion was done
accurately; no question about it.
