How can I determine what limitations my motherboard has to overclocking? I am hoping to acheive 2.4 with my Athlon 64X2 3800+

My motherboad is

My experience o/cing my old athlon xp 3200+ is that, assuming you have good cooling, the memory is more sensitive than the CPU. I have Crucial Ballistix PC3200 on the board (2.8 V vs. the standard 2.6 V) and am running (system stable) at these settings:

Multiplier = 11x (11x is stock)
FSB 220 (200 is stock)
Core voltage 1.65 (1.65 is stock)

Memory 2.5-2-2-6 (stock is 2-2-2-6) @ 2.8V
FSB:DRAM 1:1

Anyway, you'll need to experiment with the board. Read the guide for Athlon XP's in the sticky in the overclocking>CPU thread. You'll probably learn more through trial and error as I did. Just be sure you know how to clear your CMOS when your settings won't let the machine POST.

Let us know how it goes and watch your CPU temps as you go. Make note your baseline system's idle/load temps for reference and know that your room temp may change depending on the proximity of your machine to a heat duct.

There are a few guides on the net about overclocking A64 processors and some of these even have info on specific boards. I would check the overclocking boards here on Tom's Hardware to see if there is any info you can get there. You could also Google it to see what comes up. I don't know anything about your board, but thought you might like to know something that might actually be relevant to your situation. Looks like the last poster didn't read your post.
Good Luck.

I read it and thought the most similar guide for him would be the written for the XP chips and suggested that he try it and see what happens. Odds are his hardware won't burn up :)

Ok...but keep in mind the overclocking Athlon XP and A64 are very different animals. I upgraded from Athlon XP to Opteron (A64 for this discussion) and I had to do a lot of reading to "catch up". Here's the link to the A64 overclocking guide right here at Tom's Hardware Forums:

But like I said before. There is so much info out there (Google would be a good place to look as well) to read and you should be able to find info on your specific combination of CPU and Mobo.

Good Luck and be patient! But above all, Have Fun! :)
