350W power supply that has just one +12V with 17A.

The rest:

P4 2.53 GHz
1 GB RAM (2x512)
80 GB HD
Old motherboard
One disc drive

Brother wants to upgrade but doesn't quite have a lot of money. He has a 6200 right now.

A trip to the psu calc shows the gpuless system at 144w max so w/ the old card that is 179w/15A max, with the new card it will increase slightly to 187w/15.6A so with such a small increase it may work out just fine... Or will it be the hair that broke the camel's back?

If its in an OEM system like a Dell it should be fine since I have seen thier PSUs handle a calculated load that is close to max. If it is a home-built generic unit that is bundled w/ the case not sure I would risk it...

Lets not forget about the agew of the PSU. It may be able to ouput 17A but with it's age i wouldn't exspect more then about 15A or 16A. You may be able to upgrade the system to a 7300GT or maybe a 7600GS but your rally pushing it.

Good. The 7600 GS is better than the X1650 Pro.
