Hey guys, I'm getting curious temperature readings from my XFX 8800GTX XXX. It idles at 60C and hits 85C when I play Company of Heroes/HL2: Episode One maxed out @ 1920x1200(my monitor's native resolution) and crashing because of it. Would love to get some of your temps(idle/load) for the 8800GTX and preferably my specific model. I use Nvidia's nTune.

hmm i get 60-61C on idle aswell. I never checked what i got when i was running games, but i know it can't be possibly a high as yours since my games never crashed. I have the Asus model by the way, but it shouldn't make a difference since they are built the exact same way.

The card is very hot so its normal to feel a lot of heat coming through the back of your system but crashings a whole different story.

I would say check the fan speeds on your GPU when idle and when its running the game. If you notice something like the fan not moving much faster than it was idle then that tells you something as well.

Either way i'm betting its the fan on the card. Try manually increasing the fan speed on the GPU which should provide more cooling.

Well i have an 8800GTS that idles around 60 degrees and 65 degrees wither load or playing those same games, at 1280x1024 though. I have a VGA cooler right under my 8800GTS so i consider that helps alot.

Your temps are perfectly normal if a bit high on the load side. Make sure you have good ventilation and the computer isn't just jammed in a closet or a corner where no airflow can go in or out. IT best to have your computer near a open window where it can take in fresh air.

im sorry im not answering q.

but to xazax, what would be the point of putting it near the window? at the back its exhaust, unless you change the config which is not good. unless you put your case the other way around = not reaching the front or you leave your case side pannel oopen. which isnt much anyways.

feel free to prove me wrong.

My 2d temps are ~ 70c, and load hit 80 plus temps, very few OCs attempted.

Company of Heroes is a graphics whore. My temps reach the highest in that game too. Try either unclocking the card, or provide more fans for better cooling. 2 80mm fans brought down my 2 7900GTX's 8 degrees. Fairly nice I would say.

hey merc, what psu do you have? mabe it is crashing because of that?

if i may jump in... moving my computer near my window dropped all my temps about 5C. regardless of exhaust the system is still taking in cooler air.

keep in mind though that i live in NM where it's get stupid cold. 15-20F is the average low this time of year.

What case do you have? Does it have good airflow? I'm not saying you have to reseat your heatsink but perhaps it isn't getting good contact with the chip and/or memory? Don't remove it unless you know what you're doing though. 8O

Just makes me think ambient case temp. and room temp should be listed with all cooling reviews. Winter reviews as opposed to summer reviews could have a great effect on temps.

At OP: Check everywhere for dust in the case. You never know where some fan might be getting clogged.

if you haven't already, download Riva Tuner and set your GPU fan to 90% or so, this will drop the temps quite a few degrees, idle i went around 10 degrees lower and load around 5-7

Asus en8800gtx at stock speed.

Ambient 20-21c.
Idle 53-56.
Load 77-79.

My case(Antec900) is probably a factor. Front fans on low, rear and top fans on med. With all my case fans on low the GPU runs about 5c higher at load and idle.

How would difference would the EVGA kos3 edition or whatever make a difference, is it worth that extra money? or should someone spend it to get more fans or a Better Case.

one 8800GTX alone would idle = 49C - 52C Load = 60C - 65C OC'ed

two 8800GTX SLI idle = 55C - 60C Load = 75C - 82C NOT OC'ed

I have not had any crashes but am currently exploring a way to get better fresh air circulating inside my box. I'm running a 1Kw BFG PS.

I am running RivaTuner GPU monitor and one GPU runs 4C higher than the other at all times. It is probably the one with the least circulation available.

Get RivaTuner from guru3d, It has a monitor for both GPU's, and with a plugin it monitors both C2D's and you can run on the taskbar constantly. Also use it to turn your fan control on cards to 100% to help cool them.

Not worth the money. I had a regular 8800GTX before it went south with a bad voltage regulator and it ran 5C cooler than the 8800GTX KO is replaced it with. I bought a second regular 8800GTX to go with it because there is no real advantage to it. They work fine together and also, the older 8800GTX would OC just as fast or faster than the KO version.

Just some real world experience advise.

Holy shit, i just have GTS and it idles at 62C including now. I'm definetly gonna look at new cooling parts cause the PCI fan i have now is absolute shit.

Which brings me to my next question, what temperture would be the danger level for this GPU. Like at what temperture point will you might be seeing bad effects down the road?

That has been asked often and I have read lots of responses from 80C being a problem to some saying that don't worry until it goes over 100C. I personally feel comfortable with it up to the high 80's like 88 or 89C before I would be afraid something would happen. Like I said before I have seen mine go up to the low 80's with absolutely no video corruption or lock ups.

I think all they need is better circulation in the box from outside air. Also turning on the fan manually to 100% makes them a little louder but they run cooler overall.

I guess i don't have to worry then.

I bumped the fan up just 10 percent and got it down to 57-58 so that should be fine.

But ya i don't have to worry about the noise since my systems absolutely quiet. Seasonics silent fan technology works like a charm. Seriously, you couldn't tell if the computer was even on besides the power light.

Your an absolute life-saver! I did this and the temp now hovers around 70-73C under load and I haven't gotten any lock-ups, BSOD...nothing. Playing Supreme Commander at 1920x1200 with all the settings maxed is a thing to behold:)
