I've got 4 IDE drives, like so many older systems. Just upgraded to a Mobo with one ide slot and 4 SATA. Ordered a new SATA HD, but want to keep using all 4 IDE for awhile. Vista will go on the SATA, XP is going to stay on an IDE for dual booting. For speed / performance, what configuration am I better off with? IDE HDs as master / slave on the Mobo, or on a PCI Ide, or use converters to plug them into SATA on Mobo? Optical drives on Mobo, PCI, or converters? Eventually I will get another SATA HD, and the opticals will stay IDE.

If I go with converters, are both devices set as master?

Mobo is an abit IL9Pro, CPU is Intelc2d 6400, with a Diamond viper x1300.

New to this forum, would appreciate any advice. Wish I had found it before I upgraded this time around! Probably would have thought harder about Mobo and graphics card, instead of going with whatever is on sale at Fry's.

If you get a PCI IDE controller card it will force you to boot from it.
I would get a PCI SATA/IDE controller card in your case. For the IDE just use the normal jumper settings and ribbon positions as you are used to using.
