So check this out, I currently have a PCI wireless adapter from Linksys, with SRX techmology.
I'm currently leeching off my neighbors wireless, who is totally cool with that, who live across the street. Currently my DL speeds are 25kb/s, which sux. I tried ordering Qwest, but my parent said that $31 is way too much for internet and canceled it So right now that mean no 2142 till I move out.
Well my neighbor said that If I was to get 2 AP's, one at his house and one in mine, it would increase the speed of what I currently have.
He has Comcast and with 8Mb/s!
I work at Best Buy and I asked the Geek Squad and one said, it wont do you any good, the others agreed on the plan.
My plan is to connect our AP to make a wireless bridge. From his to my basement is approx. 340FT
so our AP's would be in the living room window, where is would be 100FT with no obstacles or trees.
THE question is, Will I get more DL speeds if I was to do that or will I just get better signal and no speed?
the fact that you are in the basement will affect the signal to the computer, but by how much, your Wireless card config utility already knows how much signal you are getting.
Is it giving you 100%, 50%, 3% signal strength? If it is indeed very low signal, then setting up an AP in your living room should help out with signal as there will be less interference. Wireless repeaters are a mixed bag. They transmit to you on the same frequency as they transmit back and forth to the base, AK your neighbor's router.
Picture this: If you and your neighbor were communicating by yelling across the street and you are in the basement trying to hear, it's gonna be quieter than it would be by the front window. If you add a repeater in there, AKA your mom standing in the window, she is doing double duty. She is trying to yell down to you so that you hear the message, while at the same time, trying hard to listen to the neighbor so she gets the whole message. When she only has to yell that message to you, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. But if the neighbor's whole family starts yelling messages for your whole family, your mom is trying to listen to multiple messages and yell multiple messages at the same time.
As I said, it shouldn't be a problem for 1 PC, in fact it will probably help your signal, but only if it is really weak right now. Also check your wireless throughput speed, as if it's good signal but low speed, chances are that the Access point won't help. It's possible your neighbor has throttled down his wireless bandwidth.
Take Access Points...and what I say...with a grain of salt. What I know about it may not match your situation. Good luck, let us know if you have anymore questions.
