According to a Directv representative I talked to on the phone today,
subscribers will receive the Olympics in HD over channel 84 if the NBC
affiliate in their market is owned by the network (which we already knew) OR
if the cable company in the subscriber's area is carrying the Olympics in
HD. He says that Directv is monitoring the cable-company situation and
channel 84 will be available starting Saturday August 14 for subscribers
eligible under this rule.

Do you have to subscribe to the HD package to get this?

Yes, that's how I read Directv's website. However, for existing customers
there is a promotion: "Just subscribe to the DIRECTV® HD Package for twelve
(12) months and receive the first six (6) months free beginning 8/5/04"
