NTOSKRNL corrupted?

I installed hotfixes today (downloaded from the Microsoft web site) for
Win2K Pro. It failed to boot after doing the restart. Said that the
NTOSKRNL.EXE was missing or corrupt. I'm not sure the hotfixes caused the
problems as it had been a week or so since I last re-booted.

At first it was failing almost immediately. I used the W2K cdrom to repair
in console mode and uninstalled the hotfixes (BATCH SPUNINST.TXT) .

It now goes almost all the way through the boot up process (the blue screen
comes up with the curser in the middle) but stops just short of putting any
icons on the screen. Then the screen goes black and a very brief msg
appears at the top saying something about ntoskrnl.exe. Then it does an
automatic restart.

Any suggestions on what I can do?

If I can't get w2k pro running again, then can I install XP Pro on top of
it without losing any of my data or applications?

FWIW, I found myself in the same position. I ended up repairing the OS
from the original OS disk, but it is not back they way it should be. I am
looking at starting over, with a fresh install....
