I have a desktop computer that is connected to the internet through an internal ADSL modem. To this computer i have my laptop networked through a crossover cable. I can access shared files from the laptop to the desktop and visa versa. I want to get the internet on the laptop. What setting do i need? -- (DNS, WNS, gateway, IP's, etc - do i need these?)
U need to enable ICS(Internet Connection Sharing) on the first comp for the internal ADSL modem. That should give the NIC in the same comp an IP of 192.168.0.1 automatically(If it doesn't u do... leave the gateway and DNS fields blank).
Go to the second comp and that comp also should get IP:192.168.0.X (X is 2-254)
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS:192.168.0.1
if u don't have those values there assign'em manually and that's all there is to it.
ICS means you need to keep both computers on.
You can buy a switch or a router for more security which will split your connection to each computer and you won't need to keep both on. ICS will work if you don't want to spend any money though.
