I am installing win 2k pro as a dual boot with win98 which
I have done on this machine previously. win98 installed
and runs fine. win 2k pro installs fine except at the
point during which setup is checking hardware to assign
drivers it gets halfway through the task and I get a blue
screen which reads: "hardware malfunction - please contact
your vendor for support - the system has halted" ?????? I
haven't changed any hardware on this machine since last
time I had a dual boot and all the hardware worked fine
then and currently in win98. Any ideas on what might cause
this? and imho this has got to be the lamest error message
as it is totally devoid of any useful information to
deduce the problem. Thanks.

You might have hardware that is starting to malfunction, and Win2000 is
known to be more sensitive to this than Win98. This MS Knowledge Base
article might help you troubleshoot:
