Here in Chicago, my family and I have seen that one Sony HDTV commercial at
least 20 times. This is absurd. Also, there's that five-minute (approx)
aerial film around Greece that they seem to show ad nauseum. I thought it was
cool the first seven times or so.

No one here wants to watch the Olympics any more for fear of seeing that Sony
commercial and flyby video again. Is this the same everywhere?

Ridiculous.

And I remarked to my wife, "Why are they even running this ad on the HD
version of the Olympics? The only people who will see the ad are people
*with* HDTV, so the chances of converting seem way smaller than just running
the same ad on USA, Bravo, MSNBC, etc...seems a stupid buy on Sony's part.

My guess is they couldn't sell the advertising time.

"hey todd.. hey todd... whatca doin'? Watching the game.."
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!

Yes, It is the same everywhere. We saw it here in Dallas too.

I don't mind the beauty shots of Athens so much. They are pretty and you can
sit though that for a while until they come back to the competition.

What I do mind is the fact that this whole HDTV effort on NBC's part looks so
sloppy.
They had years to figure out how they were going to fill the time and *this* is
their solution?? I'm really surprised and disappointed.

Since they obviously sold only one sponsorship to the HDTV broadcast, one would
think they might want to run a ton of spots for their fall shows. They are
running just a few, but not nearly as many as they could.

Why not just run ads in standard definition like we usually see on ER or the
other NBC HD programs?

I said the exactly the same thing to my girl friend an hour ago. People
who have just dropped $4K on an HDTV aren't likely to run out to the store
to buy another second one.

Same in Kansas City. I switched over to the SD broadcast because
the HD broadcast is so pathetic.

I'm sick of the Sony commercial too! Every single commercial break, its the
same commercial!

Likewise, everytime I see the Sony HDTV commercial I think the same thing as
others that replied here: why broadcast a commercial for HDTV's on a HDTV
broadcast!? Makes more sense to put it on a SDTV broadcast! Only thing I
can think of is that maybe it's intended for an audience that is currently
in a store and shopping for a TV. (Seems every electronics store has every
single TV tuned to the olympics.)

A lot of stores will be showing the NBC HD channel, so Sony may want the
coverage for the looky-loos.

I'd be willing to bet there is one simple answer: not enough HD people
to make it worthwhile.

And for the people complaining about pixel-- during motion scenes-
where were you during the downhill skiing of the SLC Olympics?
Watching on SD TV you couldnt see anything that resembled the ski edge
on snow because of the breakup. Caused me to stop watching the Olys
altogether!

Amen, but you would think as many times as I have seen the commercial,
I would be able to tell if they are saying "hey Todd, hey Tom, or hey
Shawn." What are they saying? Its driving me nuts!

And did you notice the irony of ironies? The Sony commercial is *not* being
presented in hi-def. The promos for NBC fall shows are in hi-def and even a
promo for my local nightly news was shown in hi-def, but not the Sony
commercial.

You have to figure that just about every store that's selling HDTV's is
showing the Olympics. This way Sony gets their message out to everybody
that's in the store looking at maybe buying a Toshibia, Mitsubishi, or
some other brand.

Isn't the commercial non HD? I have not seen it, but other people tell me

Having chips doesn't score points, and salsa actually takes some away.

Especially those stores which were still open at 9pm on a Friday!

Most electronics/TV places around here close by 9 if not earlier, like 6pm, or
at least have had their TV-department staff go home already....

[OK, so I'm ignoring their excessive repeats during the day, but still, they
need to get a clue. I should applaud NBC for this one - for showing that they
still know how to RIP OFF an advertiser by marketing to those who already have
the product in question (or one from a competitor) - then ripping us off (if
it weren't free) by replaying the OC 5x times, complete with that 15 minute
repeat glitch during the countries that start with S and T].
