Can anybody out there help me?
I've been using my HP Jornada 560 on my PC for the past couple of years
with no major problems bar Norton Internet Security which I resolved.
Two weeks ago I set up a Home network using two wireless lan cards, a
feat which took many hours and an almost total loss of hair.
Now that's resolved I find that my PDA refuses point blank to sync with
my PC. When I put it into the cradle nothing happens, and I mean
NOTHING! No attempt to start to sync on either device, if i attempt to
manually connect using ActiveSync it whips and blurps and tells me
there's nothing to connect to (it's a USB connection by the way).
I've attempted to set up Incoming Networks on my PC, allowing networks
on my pda, on activesyc on anything that moves but still not a thing.
My wireless connection is 8211.b or g adhoc whatever that means.

It may be coincidental, after a certain number of soft resets your device
may lose the ability to sync, and require a hard reset to get it back, that
happened to my ipaq eventually. See the link below.

Actually the damn thing did a software reset automaticaly when I first
tried to sync after installing the network. Haven't tried to do a
hardware reset, I'll give that a bash!
Incidentally I've been using 3.8 the super duper no quibble connect
everytime newest version, the one that my firewall said NO to!
Oh, and .Net Framework 1.1 without the latest ms patch as it won't
install it on my PC.

Nope, that didn't work....thinking of taking a big stick and beating it
into submission. It has to be this goddamn network that's causing the
grief, so any wireless network experts out there HELP!!!

I detect stress in your keystrokes...
First things first:
1. Make sure your wireless is working okay. Can you get out to web on the
PPC, for example?
2. Make sure you can talk to your PC from the PPC. Share a folder on the
PC, and see if you can access it from the PPC. Use Resco (even the demo) or
something similiar to map the share and try to access files. You can also
do this with the packaged file explorer in a pinch, but only from explorer
itself. You can also not launch programs with the default file explorer
across the wireless connection.
3. Now, if you can see the shared folder, all is good. How about doing
something logical and not rely on Wireless syncing, but rather focus on the
data you need and acting accordingly. This will also set you up for using
different servers on the network as backup access points for data exchange,
and Active Sync is extremely weak ina lot of key areas. Also, note that
Active Sync 4.0 does not even have wireless syncing, so it might be good to
keep that in mind. However, if you are determined AND you can do everything
to this point, go on to 4 (but only if you can do the above)
4. Reset the PPC and the PC - retry.
No connection - reboot the PC and retry.
No connection - HARD reset the PPC and retry (backup first, then try
syncing before restoring)
No Connection - reinstall Active Sync on the PC (remove first).
No Connection at this point (despite being able to connect) - try it
with another PC and get back to us.

***Two weeks ago I set up a Home network using two wireless lan cards***
I thought you had to have an access point to connect to. I don't see how it
could be possible to make any connection using two wireless lan cards, as
none of them will transmit a beacon to connect to. Or am I missing
something here?

Thanks everyone, perhaps I should clarify the situation:
I have two PC's 1) WIN XP and 2) WIN2K which are now linked via a
wireless network with my main PC (WINXP) linked to the internet via
cable through a second (non wireless) Ethernet card.
I am not trying to connect to the PPC via wireless as it has no
capability for this. I want to sync using USB only, only it
WON'T...EVER.... AT ALL!!!
My Firewall and Virus Package (NIS 2004) is configured for ActiveSync
3.8 (thanks to this forum I found out how to do this...all take a bow!)
As Jason has pointed out, it's probably something really simple (me!)
that's causing it. So keep your ideas flowing and hopefully the answer
will come.

Okay, you get the award for the most misleading subject of the day... The
wireless has nothing to do with it, so you should *really* quit asking for
wireless help...
Have you tried syncing to both the XP and the 2000 machine? This will help
to identify the problem, back to either the PPC or the connection cable
(cradle, etc.) itself, eliminating a possible bad install on the PC as the
problem.
If that fails and you did a hard reset( I think you stated as such in
another part of the thread. A hard reset erases all installed programs,
data etc. so you would know if you had done one.), then try another
cable/cradle. This really is the last piece of the puzzle, outside of a
truly defective PPC/bad rom image.

Yes you are ;-). 802.11 specs support "infrastructure" mode (with an access
point) and "ad-hoc" mode (without an access point). It's perfectly possible
to have a network of multiple nodes without an access point in ad-hoc mode.
I'm sure there are limitataions or downsides, but I couldn't tell you what
they are.

Weird. There's really no direct connection between your wireless networking
and your ActiveSync connection. If you're using Windows XP Firewall, do you
have exceptions set up for ActiveSync? Do other USB devices still work? I'm
wondering if your wlan card drivers somehow screwed up your usb port
drivers, some kind of resource conflict maybe.

Tony (and with a name and initials like that you must be a genius) YES!
Smack on the head, at some point the bloody Wireless Network Driver had
unistalled my VIA USB 2.0 controller (I'm using a Gigabyte K8....
motherboard).
All works well now that i've reinstalled the controller.

Cool - it WAS wireless related after all, albeit in a non-conventional way.
Go figure.
