Hi
I have installed a new Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 in my PC. It shows itself in BIOS and even on Windows (in device manager) But when I go to my PC to put files on it or anything, its not there, it only shows my Maxtor which has the Windows installed on.
The Seagate has no jumper so it can work on 3Gb's operation and I have also desintalled it and when I restarded, windows recognized a new hardware and it even showed the model but theen after its done I still dont see it in my PC.
What can be happening?
Please Help me out! I really need this hard drive working
I have never really encountered any problems simular to this one, but check in device manager to see if windows even detects the drive, or if it just is disabled or something of the sort. That's the first step. After that, there's a few things you can do, but at least find that out for now
Like the new sig?
yes, windows has the seagate drive in device manager, it shows SG3500630AS.
Im gonna try changing the cable and changing the SATA port, maybe that would do something but still I dont think is that because as I said, windows and BIOS recognizes the HDD but is just that windows doesnt show it in My Computer.
hmm, how much space does windows read your maxtor drive at, maybe windows combined both under one name. As I said, I haven't experienced anything like this that windows detects the drive and says it is using it under device manager yet doesn't in my computer.
Hey Taco!
I just noticed, I have disconnected the Maxtor drive and guess what! Windows is installed in the Seagate drive!
Remember I told you on the private I had to reinstall windows, well yesterday it was installed in the maxtor so none of the drives are the problem.
I would say my problem is the multifunction panel, it has a sata port for external use. I will disconnect that since it might be causing problems.
brb
good job, disconnect that and see if it makes a difference, although I'm not sure why it would considering the striker has excellent build quality, but you never know
i had the same issue with an maxtor hdd
try to format the hdd with partition magic
i solved that way the problem
yeah, but partition magic isn't a program that you just go to compusa and buy, it's a hefty $70 and you can't use a trial version or anything of the such to just format the drive
hmm interesting dont want to sound patronising or anything but was it definatly formatted at first and have a drive letter associated to it as that sounds like the most obvious issue
the other problems i have had like this revolve around using a raid capable MOBO and having incorrect drivers installed

err i went to my hardware provider who sold me the hdd and did it for free...
most of us (including slim) buy our parts from newegg, and I don't think they'll partition your hdd for you
If the bios reconised it. You need to use MS Disk management utility.
My Computer -> manage then disk utilities. You can partition and format it there.

ok i just replied to this topic cuz i had the same issue
if you know if by chance newwegg delivers hardware in spain just tell me cuz i really like their prices
as for formatting that hdd _for me_ sorry i do apologize but i said just how i solved not to solve that way also....
the idea about this forum is that peolple share their knowledge and experience not to start petty wars about who said -da right thing to do-
un saludo anticupidon
I don't think newegg ships out of the US, I'm sorry, but I don't really know many european shops that have good prices. And I apologize if I acted a bit harsh, it's just that slim's a good friend of mine and I want to be able to find him answers, and what you said was a good idea, but it isn't something that's possible for slim right now
ok i see even on the internet friendship means a lot thanks CERN(conseil europeen pour la recherche nucleaire) for invented the WORLWIDE WEB
i goolged a few and i foun a hardware provider who has very good prices but not like newegg prices ...what do u want i live on the OLD CONTINENT...
www.pixmania.com
not newegg but close
fingers crossed
forums like these would not work at all if people could not be nice to each other and try to be friends. Anyways, since I couldn't understand half the languages I tried and don't know their value compared to the USD, I can't say how good the shop is, but good luck with it
you need to partition it.
Download Gparted livecd here: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/g [...] g_mirror=0
burn it to a cd with a program like nero or magiciso or google how to burn an iso.
select the seagate hard drive you installed.
create NTFS partition(s), as the hard drive is > 250 gb create at least 2 partitions it is NOT mandatory but perhaps better.
250 Gb 2 partitions
320 Gb 2 or 3 partitions
400 Gb 3 partitions
500 Gb 4 partitions
750 Gb 6 partitions
hold on, windows won't let you use drives over 250gigs unless it's partitioned? That's weird

Please translate NOT and mandatory to a language u can understand in this page: http://babelfish.altavista.com/
much better
ない
But that doesn't explain why he needs to partition the drive to get it to work
Most partition programs select cluster size according to the size of the partition.
if you have a text file of 1 kb and the cluster size of the hard drive is 4 kb then that text file will occupy/use 4 kb instead because is the minimum size the hard drive would allocate therefore creating a 3 kb wasted space.
the larger the partition, the larger the cluster size (unless changed manually), larger wasted space.
On the otherside the smaller the cluster size, the less wasted space, BUT, the hard drive will work slower and harder to read files, because for each file (obviously larger than 1 kb) the hard drive will have to read more clusters the same for writing.
Therefore way to small or way to big partitions shouldn't be used unless no other choice.
I don't know if this info is accurate this is my humble opinion please search the web for more info or accuracy.
gotcha

That was true of FAT partitions, and to a lesser extent, FAT32 partitions. NTFS has eliminated this problem. NTFS uses a 4KB cluster size regardless of the volume size. NTFS also has optimal read/write speed at a 4KB cluster size.
