I have a Nokia 1100 with Cingular.
I know the Cingular SMS system (with Nokias at least), you have to specifiy
the way you plan to send any text mesaage prior to sending it one of two
ways: "Normal" or as "Email"
If you send it as "Email" it will require entering a server number which for
Cingular is 36245 or phonetically EMAIL.
When using Yahoo Messenger Mobile, all messages sent to Yahoo Instant
Messenger (mobile), just send using "Normal" mode and enter the recipient
number as 92466 or phonetically YAHOO.
I haven't used any of the other mobile IMs like AOL or MSN, but I'm sure the
procedures are basically the same.
Hope this helps!

Activating a new or refurbed TracFone soon?
Before you do, be sure to get a referral (by email)
from another TracFone user and you'll both receive
100 FREE minutes airtime. TracFone uses Alltel,
Verizon, Cingular, AT&T, and Suncom wireless networks,
just to name a few!
