Windows explorer slowed down by WiFi

Ok - nobody.

Well, in case anyone else gets it, it was a result of the fact that
one of the elements in my wifi network wasn't connecting properly
because it's wireless card didn't support 128bit coding. Once I had
got the card into the network by dropping down to 64bit, the delays in
getting double-clicked items on my desktop to open disappeared.
