Setting the "default" window size of explorer

How can I change the "default" window configuration of Explorer when I open
it?

Somehow, Explorer has gotten itself into a mode where it opens with the
window on the right about 2 inches wide and the window on the left about 4
inches wide. I would like the opposite.

ALso, I recall seeing a tip somewhere on how to set Explorer so that only
one window opens. How can this be done?
