When playing a wide screen dvd, on my wide screen tv, I am getting the bars
on top and bottom. Is this normal? Is there a different setting we should
use? Appreciate any input. Thx.

There are three different common screen sizes for material. To keep it
simple, call them square (regular TV), widescreen (fits your HDTV), and
super widescreen (you still get bars on top and bottom). There is no way
one screen size can fit all three without stretching and/or distoring the
image to some extent. Basically, what you are seeing is normal and nothing
to worry about.

Thx, John. We've just spent about 2 hours fooling around with this. LOL.

Oh, John, one more thing if you can answer:
How would we know if the DVD we got was Widescreen, or SUPER Widescreen?

Check the DVD package. 4:3, 1.85:1, and 2.35:1 are typical aspect ratios. A
regular TV is 4:3 and a widescreen TV is 1.77:1 which usually handles a
1.85:1 fully because of overscan.

If the aspect ratio is wider than 16:9, it is normal to have bars. If
you're seeing flat squished people, you should set your DVD player to 16:9
in its menu (to match your TV).

With the exception of anything from Warner, but I've gotten
it down to an art of decryping what aspect ratio the feature
is in by what they say on the back.
If it mentions being presented in a "matted widescreen" format
then its 1.85:1.
It it mentions being presented in a "letterbox widescreen
preserving the theatrical scope" then its 2.35:1.
In either case, all I care about is if the feature is in its PROPER
aspect ratio that the filmmakers intended it to be in. Anything
outside of that is wrong, and I won't stand for that.

Agreed, but there are two ways of doing the thing. In the anamorphic
prints, there will still be bars top and bottom if the aspect ratio is
any higher than 1.78 to 1, but they will be smaller. And, if you try to
play the print straight up on a 4:3 TV, people will appear tall and thin.
You need a TV that handles 16:9 straight up (which even some SD sets do
now) to handle the anamorphic prints and you need to set the DVD player
to take advantage of the feature. But I see more and more stuff coming
out in the format (most DVD players will hand it out to any TV depending
on settings).

Correct Dave, but of course this is old school news to me. :-)
