control keys don't work in telnet

when I telnet to another system while using linux, and try and use the backspace key I get "^?"

eg. attempt logout command
system%logouz^?^?^?^?^?^?^?^?
how can I stop this

If you can, use ssh. Works much better.

maybe totally wrong, but try using Ctrl-H for backspace... works on some systems for me...
