Is there an Outage in the Southeast? Specifically, Huntsville/Decatur
Alabama?

My v600 has NO signal at all, and my family's v400's all show a signal but
cannot make any calls. Yes, our bill is paid!

Can't find anything online to indicate that it it more than my problem, and
since we no longer have a landline... can't call customer service to check!

Anybody out there w/same issue??

I've heard this same general question from several people, and it seems
like Cingular had a tummy ache sometime yesterday.

Yeah we had a similar hiccup in service yesterday for about 2 hours.

Made for a very fun evening in the store.

Looks like the outage is being discussed on broadbandreports.com

The outage was nationwide. It was caused by a crash on the server or
servers that houses the HLR(Home Location Register) database. Apparently
this database hold everything needed to route, identify customers, and
handle call on Cingular's network. Other than that, I don't know much
about it what all it does other than that fact that nothing works when
it goes down.

Enjoy

If this is true, a single point of failure such as this is inexcusable for a
company as large as Cingular with a nationwide network. I can't believe
there wasn't some kind of redundancy.

Yes, they hold things which authenticate you with the network, and track
where you are. Your profile such as what features you have are also
retrieved from there.

HLRs are usually highly fault tolerant machines. It is rare for them to
go down, and when they do, it usually is a subset of the subscribers
that are without service.

Well, I'm not xdog, but the Cing fella I had breakfast with this morning
says that can happen when a handset fails to auth - it goes looking for
another network to auth on, and until it finds one, you won't have a
signal indication on the handset. So, yes, it sounds like it was an
indirect issue related to the HLR hiccup.

And, according to my breakfast bud, the HLR itself didn't fail, per se,
it started with a facility failure to the one HLR pair, but the other
side was intensively trying to sync a new 'blue' database, and the
additional instant load caused things to get scrozzled pretty badly.
Sounds like the HLR software designers have more work to do, like
deciding what's more important, handling production traffic or syncing a
database. Does the term 'shedding' mean anything to these people? One
wonders.

If I remember the conversation correctly, it was a problem with the
database that caused the network to crash and that problem had already
replicated to the backup units. Keep in mind that I got this from a
friend who knows one of the engineers who worked on the problem so by
all means I might not have all the facts, and I certainly don't know
much about the technology myself. I just thought I might pass on what
little I do know.
