I currently have a Athlon 3000+ slot 754, on a mobo with Pci-express. The video card I'm using is a Geforce 7600GT. The Power supply is a Thermaltake with 430W and 18Amps on the 12v rail.

I have heard that the 8600 series will be around the performance of the x1950 pro. My question is, would a 8600 Ultra be too much for my system, either being bottlenecked by the CPU, or not receiving enough power from the PSU?

The reason I ask this is because I'm considering whether to buy a 7900GS now, or wait and get a 8600 Ultra later. Thanks for the help.

Athlon64's are still good gaming CPUs.

A solid 430w Power Suppoly should do the trick, requiring more than that for a midrange card is hard to imagine.

Cleeve is right, the PSU will be fine with the 8600 Ultra (no extra power connector.)

I would say wait and get an Ultra instead of the 7900GS, probably will perform better and is supposed to be at a very nice price point.
