It started to detect the mouse and keyboard settings,
then entered a black screen with grey lines? Any help
greatly appreciated.

Assuming yr now back in win98;
Does yr sys meet the requirements?
Did you run the compatibility checker?
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/professional/howtobuy/upgrading/default.asp
If yes to all these try installing with min hardware

I once had that problem two thirds of the way through a windows 2000
installation and found that windows 2000 install is so well designed that on
reboot it picked up where it had left off and left me with a completely
stable installation.

As usual: Only reformat and re-start the install process, destroying all
your data, software and configurations as an absolute last resort as Windows
2000 is quite good at picking up all those settings. OFTEN despite what it
tries to tell you on the compatibility screen. (I successfully ignored all
that bilge, includung such supposedly important matters as "windows 2000
will not work with this hard drive controller" " Windows 2000 will not work
with any of your software or hardware we've detected" and such like complete
rubbish).

I dont know where you will find a REAL compatibility chart but possibly
someone else does?? www.geektools.com, www.bootdisk.com etc ??
