Have you been to the HP site? I had a 3630 years ago and remember the
problem, and if I recall HP released a patch for it

It's a problem with the hardware. The audio
chip (forget, from philips -- 1341 sounds like
it) was made specifically for mini-disc jobs
(left powered one started), not embedded devices
that need to turn power off to unused components
all the time. The thud is the thing powering up,
and the thing powering down. Used to be, iPlay
took care of this (you only heard the start thud,
and the end thud when it was all done, perhaps
hours later), but iPlay don't play that game no
more (needs 2003, and no current devices uses
poorly-spec'ed hardware... right).

I believe it is. For instance, you get a free
spell check: one L in useful. I'd recommend
the Axim X50 line. Get it while on a deal and
toss that old iPAQ (no you can't -- its battery
is very toxic -- dispose of properly, see the
manual for how).
This audio chip was used in the iPAQs 3100, 3600,
3700, & 3800. The Audiovox Maestro and the Toshiba
e570 (not sure of the model, but those two were the
same device) also.
There, you get all that, and for free! How usefulL
is that? OK -- not, but now you know.
