Return to Normalcy
Sunlight lightly poured into the small room, lightly hitting Nori's
face and rousing her awake from her slumber. Her eyes slowly opened as
she began to take in her surroundings; Big Time the Larvitar was still
curled up in her arms, sleeping soundly, with Buddy the Ninetales
curled up near her feet. She looked to one side to see the
half-breeder Bob Raiser sitting cross-legged in an easy chair, either
meditating or asleep. Behind him, one hand resting on the back of the
chair, stood Alex Masters. "Welcome back to us."
"What are you doing here?" Nori asked.
"Checking up on you," Alex replied. "You've been asleep since
yesterday afternoon. Besides, I figured you'd be hungry."
The tall girl picked up a small breakfast tray, keeping it at such
a level that Nori could survey its contents; sausages, bacon, pancakes
with butter and maple syrup, a glass of orange juice, and a small
plate of scrambled eggs were spread out in plain view, complete with
"Made it myself," Alex proudly said.
Nori's glance shifted to Bob as she asked, "And why didn't he get
"Well, reason one, he's sleeping," Alex noted as Bob's head limply
went to one side, his leaf dangling at an odd angle. "Reason two, I
wanted to see how you were doing for myself. I kinda feel responsible
for the whole mess to begin with." With a shrug, she finished, "Still,
better you alive and complaining than dead."
Nori looked at the girl, only to shake her head and say, "You
really are crazy."
"That's a very flexible term, Nori," Alex noted.
"Then explain why you went and killed someone, then saved me," Nori
asked as she shifted her position in bed.
"Me with Canmore?" Alex asked. "If he'd remained alive, he would
have continued hunting me with everything he had, and he wouldn't have
held back because of an innocent life or two. Killing him protected me
and this group. I traded one life for those of over a dozen people and
countless Pokémon in this group, along with members of my family. As
for saving you, well...I never liked losing the people I care about."
Nori narrowed her eyes, then asked, "How do I know you're not
"How do you know I am lying?" Alex asked in reply.
Nori stared at Alex for a hard second, then changed the subject.
"What was with those questions, anyway?"
"I ask myself those questions every day," Alex answered. "The
answers vary from person to person. I'm not really sure I've come up
with good answers for the first two. But I can answer the third
easily; it's what I did by stopping Canmore, and bringing you back to
"Make yourself feel better?" Nori half-snorted.
"Save lives," Alex answered. She motioned her head to the breakfast
tray and asked, "So, you going to eat, or what?"
"I'd do it, it smells great," came a familiar voice.
Both Alex and Nori looked in surprise to Bob, who had one eye open
and was watching the proceedings intently. With an irritated cry, Nori
took the tray and said, "If this is poisoned and I die, I'm coming
back and haunting you both."
The three emerged from Nori's room in the Pokémon Center to find
the rest of their group waiting for them. Surtur the Blaziken and
ShadowWarrior the Murkrow stood just outside the door, silently
standing guard. Thyme the Medicham was meditating in a corner about
six inches off the ground, Mimic having morphed into a similar form
and remaining on the floor. Raffy was watching both with slight
bemusement. Carol was lounging on the couch, gingerly eating a bag of
potato chips, while Ben and Jeff were discussing something in a
corner. Rubix, meanwhile, was slouching against a nearby wall, a small
bag in one hand.
"'Bout time you woke up," Rubix groaned. "I'd rather not deal with
Set for the rest of my life."
"Hello to you too," Nori dryly noted.
#You sure you made the right decision keeping her breathing?# Raffy
telepathically asked Alex.
Alex smirked at the half-Psychic and said, #What do you think?#
[NS: You know, I think I'll get to like college. Whoever wants to
start up the Gym Battles, feel free.]

A few minutes later, Wattsonn was back and i just as good of a mood as ever.
"So, which one of you guys is next for some shock therapy? I haven't had a good
time like this in a while." Wattson said, cheerful as ever.
"I'll go," Jeff said, grinninng, but serious. A determined look was on the youngster's
face. Wattson nodded.
"All right squirt, let's get started." Wattson said.
Up in the stands, the observers were having another pre-battle analysis session
"Wonder what Jeff's going to do this time?" Ben asked.
"Why, because he can't rely on Mary's Perish Song to get the last one?" Bob asked.
"Well if Jeff learned his battle skills from dad, then what you would expect to see, will
be exactly what you don't see." Bob said crypically.
"What do you mean?" The newly arrived Alex asked.
"Pop's surpised more than one opponent with a fire-breathing Gyarados"
"How water-type learn fire attack?" Mimic asked
"Don't know. I just know that it can be done."
Down at the field, Wattson's assistant had stepped back onto the field.
"Attention!" the assistant cried out. "The Gym Battle between
Jeff of Goldenrod City and Wattson of the Mauville Gym will now
commence! Each trainer will be limited to two Pokémon, and only the
challenger may switch out. Let the battle begin!"
"Electrike, playtime!" Wattson called, as a playful-looking electrike appeared
on the field. Though the Static flowing aroud it's fur wasn't helping it's cute
and playful factor.
"Shadow, come on out!" Jeff called as a Nincada appeared.
Up in the stands, Ales was wathing with worry and interest. "Does he know that
he's using a ground-type?"
"Don't know, but you have to admit that it's an odd choice," Bob said.
"That it is."
Down below the battle was already starting, with Shock Wave meeting a Sand Attack.
The lightning coursed across the field, striking the hapless bug, who merely felt a bit of a
tingle when the electric attack struck home. Wattson looked a bit stunned for about half
a seond before getting a Quick Attack out of his little Electrike.
But Shadow was nowhere to be seen. The electric canine looked for his opponent but
all he found was a hole ...
.... that was Shadow's Dig attack. Eleectrike was down but far from out.
"So the bug's got some spunk, eh?" Wattson said smiling. "That's okay, I got more.
Electrike, Double Team."
And with that one Electrike became three as they ran circles around the hapless Nincada.
The three electric hounds were proving to be hard to hit, as evident by the now second
consecutive missed Dig attack.
"Come on Shadow, can't you hit 'em?" Jeff pleaded, knowing inn his head that it was
the Double Team doing it and not the Nincada's bad aim. It proved to be frustrated to
the young breeder/trainer all the same. And it proved to be highly annoying to the Nincada
as he showed off one of his inheirited skills, and the reason for his darker tone.
Shadow seemed to fade out of sight, smack around the real Electrike a couple time and
fade back in a couple feet away from the Electric-type, striking the best ninja pose
that the bug can do.
A few things happened in quick succession. First was total stillness, followed by a
stray tumbleweed oming from somewhere. Second was Electrike passing out from
the Faint Attack, followed by the official declaration of Electrike being unable to battle.
Third, and the most important thing was the bright white glow that surrounded the
The end result was one Electrike down and one Ninjask up.
Up in the stands, the converstation started up again.
"Jeff's in trouble, Ninjask is a flying-type, not a ground-type like Nincada is," Alex
"And he can't use his Azumarill like in the other two battles," Ben added.
"I think he's doing just fine," Bob noted, eyeing the look his little brother wore
"How Bob tell?"
"First of all, he doesn't seem worried that his advantage just evolved into a
disadvantage. That and I think he's picking up dad's style of battling in the
Down in the field, Wattson had recalled the fallen Electrike. "You got spunk
kid, but flyers are easy picking for any electric-type, like Magneton!" The portly
Leader declared, as the electromagnetic pokemon hovered into battle. All the
while, Shadow was experiencing the Speed Boost for the first time.
"All right Magneton, Ready ... Aim ..."
"Dig Shadow before it fires!"
The Ninjask dove into one of the holes that it previously dug, in a previous form,
seemingly going faster as he dove in. Before he dug in though, Magneton was
taking careful aim, Locking On to its prey.
The giant ball of paralyzing electricity was shot just as Shadow bolted up from a
hole. While the Dig attack did impressive damage considering the double advantage,
the Zap Cannon floored the hapless Ninjask. Arcs of lightning coursed across the
bug pokemon, who was struggling to get up, but with paralyzed wings, Shadow
wasn't moving in the near future. The thump of him fainting was also a good clue.
"Ninjask is unable to battle."
"Aw nuts." Jeff said, snapping his fingers. I should have read the book more. "Ah
well, I guess I'll have to use my backup plan." He clutched a pokeball. "I dub thee
Shade, now lets go get 'em for your brother!" Jeff called as he chunked the pokeball
out into the fray. It opened, releasing the pokemon that was born inside of it. Its
ghostly eyes opened, looking at its trainer and partner.
"I'll get him the same way squirt." Wattson said. "Magneton, Lock On and prepare
to fire the main Cannon."
"Ton," was the affirmative response, as its three eyes locked on and followed the
floating bug around. Strangely, Shade only went up, making sure that nothing was
behind him but a generator. Once in position, the magnetic menace fired the Zap
Cannon, its aim true, ready to swat the bug pokemon to the ground in a paralyzed heap.
So Wattson was highly surprised when nothing happened, save a generator getting
a few thousand volt instant power-up. Everyone was stunned to various degrees
with the exception of Jeff.
"Wonder Guard -- stops lightning attacks dead." Jeff said, grinnig evilly (for him at
least). "Shade burrow." Jeff said.
"Ja," the ghost bug said as it phased underground, not bothering to physically dig.
Either way, the result was the same, the mechanical Magneton getting smacked
about with another Dig attack. The magnetic menace, at least in Jeff's opinion,
was still floating. However, it wasn't a steady float.
"We almost got him Shade, how about another Dig attack?" Jeff posed to the
his spectral companion.
"Use Thunder Wave Magneton. It'll give us time to think."
Luck was on Jeff's side this battle as Shade managed to phase through the floor
again before the arcs of paralyzing lightning could reach the living husk. A few
seconds later it was all over as another Dig attack connected with the magnet
pokemon. Magneton almost literally fell to pieces. It definitely looked like
it needed some repairs.
"Mageton is unable to battle. The match goes to Jeff and Shade."
"Yahoo!" Jeff cried trying to glomp Shade. However, being a ghost-type, the little
breeder just passed through him and he landed in a heap on the floor.
"Now that's spunk!" Wattson said laughing all the way. "It's not often that someone
uses something so off the wall, and for that, I'm proud to give you this Dynamo
"Thanks. WHOO HOO!" Jeff cried in overenthusiastic happiness. He bolted
back up to the stands, about as happy as one could get. Bob grinned, his brother's
happiness had a habit to be contagious at times.
"Looks like it's you're turn Ben," Bob noted, even as his little bother was dragging
him into the celebration with Shade.
A perversion of nature....how exciting!
