In an interesting move, AMD is planning to open the CrossFire architecture to 3rd party chipsets, so NVIDIA, VIA and SIS are able to use it.

It seems the multi GPU is maturing and we will potentially see motherboards which support both CrossFire and SLI. 8)

Lets hope NVIDIA will do the same.

Open standards are the way to go.

Why are companies like nVidia so anal about closing their standards? That is counter to the spirit of the PC - the PC is all about open standards.

Discuss.

I'm not sure if AMD would do this if it was not behind and under pressure. SLI is more popular from CrossFire, so this can be a step for AMD to increase interest among enthusiast about its solution.

Think about it this way, if NVIDIA had allowed Intel to use SLI, then there would be little interest in its 680i. Right now people who want the best are looking for SLI 8800 setup.
