There's always a lot of discussion about video cables and the pros/cons of
DVI over component, Monster over other brands, etc. What about audio cables?
Are there any clear differences in what's on the market? What would be the
best choice for a Samsung HLP-5063W which has jacks for only analog audio?

If you want better audio, get an A/V receiver with digital audio inputs and
good speakers. Analog audio to a TV's speakers won't be improved by changing
the wire.

Any well shielded cable would be a good choice for that application,
although you may not experience any problems using what came with the
DVD player.

Use whatever you've got - it won't make any difference. The Samsung's
audio capabilities are mediocre at best, so there's little point in
worrying about cables.
I have the same set, and I just disable the audio portion of the set
completely. All my audio comes from digital feeds to an external receiver.

That's what I plan to do actually, but I was curious to sample the Samsung's
audio first and didn't know if different audio cables would matter.
I don't know what STB Adelphia is bringing out tomorrow and what audio/outs
it has. My DVD has dibs on my receiver's only optical input as I play a lot
of music CD's with it. But a coax should sound nearly as good through my
system.
Thanks.

audio interconnect cables are pretty much insensitive to anything - buy
cheap - Wal-Mart.
As for speaker cables, that's different - especially for high power
systems - buy big stranded copper, but you don't have to go for enhanced
karma ,cyrogenically-blessed, oxygen-repellent, silver dipped, subspace
hyper-matrixed cable or any such nonsense.
wire gauge decreases as wire gets bigger - get #12 (heavy duty zip cord) -
Lowes, Home Depot, hardware store
buy it in bulk and attach some Radio Shack gold plated contact ends to it to
make the best contacts at the amp and speaker.
make sure you identify the polarity correctly at each end so you don't
invert a signal
Tell you enthusiast friends you originally had the Monster's, but didn't
like their limited highs, so you spent your children's college money on
platinum coated/diamond extruded, individually blessed Shunyata's or
something snooty... they will INSTANTLY hear the difference (even where none
exists).

If it's digital coax, it should sound identical to the optical signal.
If it's analog coax, it should sound nearly the same, though which one
is "better" is more dependent on the converters in the two devices than
on the cable.
Adelphia will bring you an SA device, likely a 3250, 3250HD, 8000, or
8000HD, depending on what services you've asked for. The SA3250HD is
their standard HD box, the SA8000HD is their HD DVR.
All of these devices have digital coax outputs, though with some of them
you need to use the analog outputs as well. The older devices will only
deliver digital audio from the digital channels (channels 100 and up),
while the newer (HD) ones will deliver digital audio from all channels.

Monster cables are the best!
They are injected with NITROGEN so that the signal flows REALLY fast!
(Same reasons that race cars use NITROGREN!)
The arrows on the cable help the electrons flow correctly also. (Keeps them
from getting lost!)
I'm joking, of course.
Any cable with correct shielding will work fine. If its cable that you'll
be plugging in and out often, look for something a little rugged as well.

Yeah! A lot nof level headed people here. I'll never forget the first time I
strolled into a high-end (read "rip-off" ) Hi-Fi store and got my first pitch
for Bi-Wired Speakers.
"So both wires are actually going to the same connection?"
"Yes, it helps prevent 'Back EMF' and also effectively increases the gauge"
"Why not just use bigger wire, electrically it's the same"
"Yeah, but you've still got the "Back EMF' problem then!"
So 2 sets of cables for each speaker and each run was around $500! I walked
out of there stunned that people could be so gulible!

actually, the bi-wire stuff does have some basis in fact
but decent crossovers and low resistance (big gauge) make it trivial.

I used to be a cable atheiest until a few years ago I tried monster s-vhs.
The improvement in black level was noticable.
I also noticed some improvement when I tried their speaker wire
Say what you want, these cables are worth it, especially the componet.
And besides they look really great instead of the hodge-podge of mess that
used to be behind my receiver.
And the quality's better. You wouldnt put stamped tin wheels on a porsch,

I've found that monster cable plugs are so stiff (good connection) that
customers are pulling off the ground connection for the RCA jacks out of the
back of the TV. That's not good, give me a weaker gold plated connector on
a cheaper cable anytime. They should only be plugged in once every couple
of years anyway.

No your not a "heet seeker moron" whatever the hell that is, just a plain
old everyday moron.
I've seen asswipes like you every since I've been in audio, you seem to
think that the primary purpose of high end audio is to save money, which is
REALLY stupid.
If you want to save some money, numnutz, get yourself a tv/vcr combo from
wallmart

Please explain to us how a piece of wire can do signal
processing, how it can alter the "black levels" of a video
signal.
Just answer that one, Wizard, and spare me the spewing venom

You need decent cables, doesnt matter who makes em.
Right now I have a RCA brand componet cable running from my receiver to my
tv, and since my receiver upconverts everything to componet EVERYTHING goes
through this cable, and it looks great.
The main thing about cables is to get one with gold plate, to get a better
connection and to help against corrorsion, and decent sheilding so you not
only dont lose your signal but you dont get interferrence.
Theres a lot of decent brands out there, its just that monster is everywhere
and sell 3 ft interconnects for as low as 10 bucks for a 3 meter pair. A
bargain really.
I just dont see why anybody who spends a lot of coin on audio gear would
hook everything up with the "red, white, and yellow" cheapies made out of 30
guage wire and a thin coat of plastic, with cheap tin or brass clasps
Penny wise but pound foolish is the phrase that applies here, I beleive. Why
reduce the level of performance in your system to the level of a freebie
pair of cables that came with your gear?

Not only that, this $147.00 receptacle is wired from $.50 a foot of generic
coax! I believe it was PT Barnum who said "no one ever lost money over

QUOTATION: No one in this world, so far as I know ... has ever lost
money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the
plain people.

BTW, I agree with you about the wires.

This is actually true, especially for speaker wire, the larger the guage the
lower the resistance and the less your amp has to work to get power through
it.

I don't doubt it. But, knowing what I do about what it takes to
change the black level, it certainly is a puzzlement. I'd sure want
to get to the bottom of it--even if it means buying yet another cable,
taking the ones I have apart or measuring their parameters.
Of course, you have to keep in mind that I'm like that. I've been
known to buy a device just to see how they can make it so cheaply.

There is a remote possibility that the Monster cable actually carried
the analog SVideo signal more cleanly than the cable to which you
compared it. If so, I suggest that you choose another cable for your
basis of comparison. It's easy to find an inexpensive cable that will
perform equally with Monster - try your local Walmart.
The more likely explanation is that you are a victim of the placebo
effect. It's very common for people to find that cables for which
they've spent a lot of money provide much better performance than those
that are being replaced. Unfortunately, those differences tend to
disappear completely when proper blind testing procedures are used.

Steve is the poster child for the placebo effect.
