I am new at this so please bare with me. I hope my questions and explanation is clear/understandable. My knowledge of this is low.

My problem is that I (believe) have opened up the ports I want but according to the websites that I have done to, to test if the port is open is telling my otherwise. So I think I am not doing it correctly.

I went into the setup screen 192.168.0.1 and added the ports i want open.

When I go to a website to test if the port is open, it says it CAN NOT connect to the port.

From further research, it is my understanding that I must have a static ip and that it can not be setup to obtain ip automatically.

Also my ISP will not give me the dns server addresses which I believe I need inorder to have a static ip.

How to I get my router to port forward while still having a DHCP Enabled?

Does it have something to do with getting the Netgear RP114 router setup for a static route? I went to the Static Route option but I do not know if I am doing it correctly.

to get dns addresses. Run->type "cmd" in black window type "ipconfig /all" That should give you the dns addresses. If it doesnt hook the computer up to the modem directly, restart modem and computer and then try the ipconfig/all again. Should show you the dns addresses.

You need a static ip to forward ports on some router. Some routers you can completely open ports to all computers but thats not a good idea.

dont need static route.

Look through the manual for more detailed instructions on setting up port forwarding on your router.

If you have setup port forwarding correctly, the next thing is to look at your software firewall and the application you are using.

has this been resolved yet as i have been trying to forward a port on my rp114 netgear router with no luck

first of all i have no firewall and peerguardian is disabled

i followed the steps on www.portforward.com

1. i found the port i need to free up in the programme it was 16000
2. i then went to cmd, and typed ipconfig/all and found my ip address, my subnet mask, my default gateway, and my DNS server address (there was only 1 dns address)

3. on portforwarding it then gave me a static ip address, of 192.168.0.146

3. i then went to network connections and tcp properties, and typed this in ip address box then typed in my subnet mask, my default gateway and my dns address and clicked ok

4. i then opened webpage, and typed in 192.168.0.2 which the address of my router, i entered login information and got to netgear screen

5. then i went to port settings, and entered the start and end port of 16000 and the ip address of 192.168.0.146 clicked apply

now it is my understanding that this should open that port
however i then checked if the port was open with a tool and it said it wasnt.

can someone PLEASE help me with this as its infuriating

Check and see if the windows firewall is on. If so either turn it off, mostly useless anyways, or open the port up.
Also see if there is a selection on the router settings for udp, tcp or both in the port forwarding settings.

I am unsure about your specific model but with my Netgear, i open the ports in 'services' and then i have to allow them through the hardware firewall under the tab 'Firewall rules'

It then works perfectly

Given that you are on DHCP and the IP address being assigned is 192.168.xxx.xxx (which is a private IP) the problem most likely lies with the ISP. They have probably blocked this port on their end to reduce usage of P2P or other applications that eat bandwidth.

The easiest way around this is to use port 8080 on your application. If this doesn't work... get a public IP.
