IBM to build content protection technology into processors

BM today announced a hardware-based technology that is squarely aimed at preventing the unauthorized use digital content on consumer electronics medical devices and defense systems. Built directly into the processor "SecureBlue," the technology promises to provide much more robust content protection than software-based DRM systems available today. Read more

Security software alone not enough to beat Internet threats, says CA

The growth of botnets has prompted several voices to claim that the war against this threat already has been lost. However, security software developer CA says the war "is far from over." It can be won, we were told, but Internet users will have to learn websmarts and be cautious about a false sense of security that is created by antivirus software - and Windows Vista. Read more

Hello, I have been getting this message on my display (JVC LT-26wx84 using
the DVI input with a monster DVI400 cable) and I don't know what it really
means.

The full text of the message is as follows:

"The HD content protection of your display has been compromised. Please use
the YPbPr outputs for your HD connection"

I am not sure who is sending the message, The Cable Box (Motorola
DCT6200-2005) or The Monitor. The message displays for about 20 seconds and
then disappears. In the mean time, the HD image doesn't seem to be affected
at all.

Does anybody know what the message means and what to do about it... I don't
want to just use the YPbPr for HD since the DVI is noticeable better.

Thank you,
Luis.

"The problem is the latest 7.10 firmware for Motorola boxes (5100, 6200,

There's a big thread about it at AVS forum, but they're down today for
maintenance.

Motorola is supposedly working on it, but who knows how long it will take. A
temporary fix is to change the power on/off sequence so the DVI connection
has time to 'handshake.' Since the Moto boxes don't have discrete on/off
codes I leave mine on all the time - that won't work for now.

To turn off:
Cable box off first, then TV

To turn on:
TV on first, then cable box

If you have a remote that incorporates macros, you'll have to make a
separate 'On' and 'Off' macro. That will at least keep us from having to
unplug the power or DVI cable to get it to re-synch."

Welcome to the wonderful world of Hollywood-mandated copy protection. Now
you understand what DVI is REALLY all about.

It sure as hell wasn't developed for quality reasons.

I've had to modify this a bit;
To Turn everything off: Turn cable box to non-digital channel, like
comedy central, switch tv to antenna input, turn tv to same channel as cable
box, turn cable box off, turn tv off.
To turn everythin on; Turn on TV, turn on cable box, switch to cable
(DVI) input, turn cable channel to desired programming.
Before I figured this out, I would just be unplugging the dvi cable, which
was a big hassle, so I called comcast, and they said I was getting the
message because they don't support the use of DVI, maybe he meant the box.

Thank you for the replies.

I still fail to understand what the issue is about. Is it my display? or
is it the box?... I can still view the image.

Since the message just stays there for a few seconds, I wander if the image
I am looking at is affected in anyway... It seems to look the same as
before, although I am starting to doubt that I am getting the whole 1080i
resolution because of the DHCP feature. Somewhere I read that the signal
supposed to be switched back to analog in this case. Is that true? How can
I verify?

Thank you,
Luis

I will add my 2 cents although it is probably only worth a penny. I
have a Motorola DCT6200 Cable Box and a MITS WS-65713. Getting a
similar error message. I have had an Adelphia tech out and talked on
the phone to the MITS people. Both agree it is a timing problem when
the Motorola switches from a standard channel to a HD channel and vice
versa. Now they disagree on who is to blame. I tend to believe the
MITS tech. He says that the cable box takes too long to switch from
signal to signal. The TV sees this as a loss of signal and displays
the error message. Both agree that it does not cause any loss of
image quality. Of course this is a MITS TV and I suppose it would
depend on what your set does when it see a signal loss.

Does the DVI spec even have anything about copy protection in it? I thought
it was the newer enhanced HDMI/HDCP ports that may have copy protection
functions. Sort of an enhanced DVI (built in audio and copy protection-both
enhancements I could live without).

Compatibility issue with the Motorola Box and it's imbedded software. No
problem with your set, just an absolute pain until all parties resolve the
incompatibility issues with the HDbroadcast schemes being experimented with
currently and the supplied hardware. .

Thank you... that's consistent with my findings. The power ON/OFF
sequencing works for me also.

It's amazing that so many people had been having the same issue for so long
and there is very little information about it, and no solution still.

Regards,
Luis.
