I'm in this class that is *FREE* and is for high school kids that want to "build their own computer". I already know how to build one, although i never have. They are giving each kid a budget of 475-600 dollars to build their own(buying our own monitors, keyboard/mouse, OS's are free)
I want to be able to use this money to buy the core parts needed to simply run a computer, and once brought home add up to another $700 in parts (8800gts, more ram, etc.) to make ti a gaming computer.
The guy running the course is pro AMD, i am pro Intel, and he is leaning towards getting the x 2 3800, as i would choose the e4300-e6400.
I doubt we could fit a c2d in this budget, although I could if i were able to use my own money (which i dont think is allowed, as not all kids are)
How will these low-end dual core AM2's work. Will i be able to upgrade to a nice 250 ish dollar barcelona thingy down the line (i heard u need AM2+)?
And is this mobo a good choice ( tis a combo deal at the bottom)?http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103036
I'm not sure if i should OC, as this is a first time build. ive heard this will be plenty fine for the next few years as i will be gamign at 1680 x 1050 and a 8800gts is all that matters.
Since this 3600x2 is OEM what heatsink should i get, because ive heard it owns in Oc'ing.
Or, should i ask the guy if i can upgrade to a 4200x2? something around 150 dollars?
while the e4300 is the better choice most likely you never notice the difference unless you bench mark it.
tell him your getting an 805! maybe he think its an old amd?
the amd x2 is great chip - core 2 is an improved version!
make sure you get overclocking mobo so you get get it run good after you class.
this is a great example of liberalism and unauthorized bias at all levels of education - pushing the amd under dog on you! when clearly intel is the better choice.
if you get the new 65w am2 you can cool it with any heat sink
I just told you how to do this build with a C2D within the budget...? And if by overboard you mean "going to make your computer faster for 30 more bucks (compared to cas 5)" Then, yes. Lower timings aren't just for OCing, they also make your computer run faster.
I'm confused about what is wrong with the build that I told you? Do I not understand your situation correctly?
Nice job featherstone. Good reccomendation. Out of curiousity how long did it take you to put that together.
Ha thank you! You seem to appreciate it more than OP... Uhm took me 10-15 minutes. But I look at parts a lot (Way too much) and have really found the sweet spots that I like so I can figure out a build pretty quick, depending on what deals are going on at the moment and what exactly the poster wants.
I have just started with in the last month or so looking into parts. I fix computers on the side and a lot of my customers are looking to buy new computers and get this THEY DONT WANT DELL. Whoo hoo.

Haha, people have finally realized that they can get the exact same parts for half the price eh? Good for them!
That and they realize that they cheaper because of cheap parts. As far as price point, with shipping tax, and having to pay for a extra warranty the cost is more with a dell
Oh no feathersome, lol, i extremely appreciate the time you, and others put in doing.
I just said that because im not sure if lower CAS ratings actually translate into higher FPS or faster encoding by that much for the price, because getting 2 gigs of that for $220 vs. getting 2 gigs of CAS5, which is $160 after rebate, is a considerable sum.
I would say a x2 3600, a decent mobo like an asus m2n32 sli, and team xtreem ram. Look them up, they have good micron ram chips, or the dark series is a value brand.
Just put most money into cpu, mobo, and ram and go crap for the rest of the stuff.
dude use a 805 in a c2d mobo like a p5n ($70 open box at new egg) or even a p5n-e with new 650i chip set. swap out the chip later.
do not listen to vett hes a hard core amd fanatic - or amti-ite - amddites are like underground people on the time machine. bleach white skin, pointy teeth and probably cannibals. I have never seen one since they live in the amd caves and cry intel cheats or this new chip will be out next.....They only use amd products and if you mention intel they frealk out. anyways.....
you could swing an intel system on your budget i send you a build list. use a psu and case combo it work fine i do it all the time. you get a case and psu for $40
I would be careful offering this information right now. I know you are enthusiastic about AMD but be cautious as well.
We have STILL very little information on K8L. We certainly do not have benchmarks.
I would have said the same thing to people recommending the C2D prior to receiving any real world numbers.
Recommending a build because it meets the dollars needed is one thing. Recommending it because it will be upgradeable to a phantom chip is another. Until it ships in ES and we start to get numbers it is a Phantom/Vaporware chip or even better (an idea still).
That would be like me saying that people should buy a C2D motherboard because the Penryn will later release. We are still not 100% that it is a drop in.
If you want a Core 2 Duo, you can always get a decent motherboard and the cheapest Celeron D you can find for now then upgrade to a Core 2 Duo with your own money later.
