I'm working on getting Win2000 Server up and running. One
key event log error that keeps occuring at start-up:

"Remote_Procedure_Call service doesn't respond to start or
control requests in a timely fashion"

More about : starting error

When you view the logged events in Event Viewer in the upper right corner,
third button down is a copy to clipboard, then you can paste in the body of
a reply message.

Please do so for all system events so we can see all of the event detail.

Here is chronological list of events on start-up. As you
can see, I have other issues. I figure one thing at a
time. The Remote_Procedure_Call system seems to generate
the error popup. Basic setup is a stand-alone server with
one client PC. Server has static IP address. Server
configuration is not complete.

Here's the event log on start up now. The only thing I
eliminated was an error with the RSM database - by
removing the jump drive I had plugged in. All other errors
repeat. I've disabled the NIC to the client PC for the
time being. I've cleared the DHCP scope. I can't seem to
permanently stop DHCP. I've cleared all address leases,
reservations and scope options. One address pool remains
10.0.0.3 - 10.0.0.254. I've made sure the complete static
IP addressing is correct for the internet NIC. The
internet connection works fine.

Okay...I ran sc query "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" and

okay I can run sc query now and get results

I know how to run sc query, but I can't get any specific
information about RPC. I might be typing the command
wrong. I thinking if it never started, what info am I
expecting? When I run "sc query" I get a list of 11
services running.

This one isn't good. The RPC service is a core component of the operating
system. This indicates serious damage to the operating system. You can try
an in-place upgrade. Sounds like what you have is just a test environment so
you may not have much to loose. Or you might want to just blow it away and
start a new install.

Thanks. One last thing. Would you delete the RPC
services so that the inplace upgrade refreshes the
installation? Also if I have to do a reinstall, how do I
best delete the current installation?

1.) No let the in-place upgrade do it's thing.
2.) To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or
setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows
2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.
