As far as serviceability and reliability stay with the SONY or JVC.

JVC and serviceability? Not in our area. JVC will not even discuss a
problem with anyone that is not an ASC, and there are none within 80 miles.
There are big gaps in their service network and they don't seem to care,
IME.
The Sony is a good recommendation, among the best in LCD based products.
The JVC reportedly looks very good, but check out the service situation in
your area before buying it or anything else. I'd also look at some other
brands of DLP. There are a lot of new products coming from better
manufacturers than Samsung that look very good.

Leonard,
Have you heard what Samsung has been doing the last two years. They have
really turned around from a reliability and service/support standpoint.
I've been a service center for 4 years and they are really pretty good now.
Samsung is going to be providing lcd screens (non projection) for Sony and
I believe DLP technology also. Sony has stopped producing glass crt's.

Purple Knight is right about the 55XS955. Sony's supposed to have a 60XS
too. I'm in exactly the same situation you're in and I decided to wait until
the new sonys come out in sept. From what I heard the XS models will be
about 1500-2000 cheaper than the current XBR and have most of the cool XBR
features, plus a few of it's own like the cablecard. I've seen pictures and
it even looks somewhat like today's XBR. Sounds worth the wait...I just hope
they make a nice stand for it that doesn't cost 1000 bucks too.
In my option samsung's dlp looks great. My biggest problem with Samsung is
that growing up Samsung was always considered a low-quality, cheap brand.
Today, they seem to have changed their image alot and that's great. But for
me, the price of an HDTV is a big risk. Then their's also the fact they
won't have an integrated ATSC tuner or cablecard until sometime next year.
I DO want to see Hitachi's new Cineform series though, also due in Sept.
Supposedly, they will have everything from a 42-70" screen with a cooler
black cabinet instead of the silver. It's also supposed to have all the
goodies of the Sony. On the other hand, Sony is all I've ever owned in terms
of A/V stuff, so lots to be said for that..
<sigh> choices...

Both sets have a way to go with displaying true blacks and with detail in
gray areas of the picture. Can't wait to see how far they have come with the
2005 models about to hit the street.
