Alright, about a month ago, I bought a 9800 pro from a friend to put into my old agp pc for my brother to last it a couple more months. Now, I've read on some forums that older drivers for this card are much better than the new ones, but is that true? If it is, then what would be the best driver for it? The only game he plays on it as Counter Strike Source, so you can imagine why I want to squeeze more performance out of the card.
The "best" driver is the one that works best on your pc. It "should" be the current driver but that isn't always the case.
I know when I upgraded my older pc last year and reinstalled my old 9800 on my father's pc I had alot of problems with the current (at the time) driver and couldn't get a signal to the monitor.
I had to go back quite a few driver revisions until I found one that worked properly.
that was my experience though, , and theres no reason to assume you'd have the same problems. I'd say start with the latest driver and see how it goes. If you have problems with it try an older one, till you find one that works well for you.
No no, I'm not having any problems with it. I just want to find the driver that works best with this particular card, to just squeeze all the performance I can out of it. The latest one doesn't seem to take advantage of all of its power, so that's why I asked if anyone knew which worked best with it.
I have had the 9800 pro since they first came out and had all sorts of performance problems with the newer drivers and found that the older driver ver 5.11 was the best for performance and no crashes during games, especially in hl2....5.11 also does not nneed stupid framework.net
