I've read small articles about running power, cable, cable internet, and a few other features through already existing power lines. The biggest problem was getting all the signals through transformers, etc. where the signal would be at the greatest risk of degrading. I think the research was in Philadelphia, PA (USA).
www.commwavz.com has high speed internet in some areas using line of sight and small radio towers. I don't think its caught on all that well though.
