Service guy just left. He told me exactly what someone here told me. Only he
charged me 75 bucks to do it. He was here for all of 15 minutes. That's good
money.

Anyway, he says he has to replace the convergence amplifiers STK something
or other and a couple of resistors. The charge will be 330 dollars.

I'd really like to take care of this myself so I was hoping I could get some
direction from someone here on how to do that. I know how to solder as I
regularly work on electrical equipment. I know what an IC looks like and
have access to tools necessary for replacement.

If anyone can help me avoid some of these costs then I would really
appreciate it.

Rick.

15 minutes. Plus the time to get to your house and back. Plus the time in
training. Plus the years of experience. Plus the costs of a vehicle. Plus
the overhead of a store. Plus the insurance. If he did trips like yours
all day he might break even.

Maybe a little high, but it depends on the market. In Gainesville, FL we
charge $50 for each service trip, $120 (typical) - 190 (if problems in the
DCU or other additional problems beyond the outputs and resistors) for
labor, depending on the depth of the repair, and about $27.50 each for the
output ICs. IMO, he should have been prpared to do it on the first trip.
We always get the model info up front and verify inventory on convergence
amps and likely related parts for these kinds of calls.

Don't try it. What will you do if you put the chips in and they blow due to
something you missed? You will have to call him and you may do more damage.
Let someone with experience handle it. Just make sure that the servicer
really does have experience with these sets and will do detailed
convergence, focus, and white balance while he is in it.

I didn't say it was too much money. I said it was good money.

Well then I wish it had been you looking at my set. He says it will take a
couple of days to get the parts.

Like what? unplugging it? Your right though, I could miss something but if I
do get it taken care of right then I saved myself a bunch of money. By the
way I found the service manual for sale on ebay for 10 bucks. Not that it
would show me how to do these replacements but I bet it would be handy to
have.

You will have to call him and you may do more damage.

Not sure if he does have experience with these sets but he did know exactly
where to look to find the switch in the back for the multi point
convergence. He has written on the service order that he would be doing a
convergence alignment and a geometry alignment. 115 bucks for both.

Thank you for the reply.
