I'm building a new comp and would like to know if I need a modem card or ethernet card to be able to connect to the internet using cable?

Or if I ever get DSL would I need a 56k modem?

You need an ethernet card (NIC), which may be bulit into your motherboard.

You only need the 56K modem for dialup services or for sending / receiving FAXes.
