I've just finished assembling my computer except for the 2GB memory kit, which I will be getting in a few days or so. My question is, can I, in the meantime, boot up the computer and sort out the basics such as BIOS, operating system and drivers, or any other non demanding tasks just to get things rolling?
My specs are as follows:
Intel E6400
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
WD 320Gb HDD
NEC 7173 DVD
Sapphire X1950GT g/card

If you try booting and it beeps, it means your system build is going fine.

Thats just cruel

All that means is the power has been turned on, the processor has accessed the BIOS and the boot sequence has discovered there is a problem with the RAM (obviously, as there is none).

The system halts there and beeps 'til you turn it off.

No. Modern mobos need a minimum of a processor, video card, and memory in order to POST. Back in the day when mobos had some level of onboard memory you could, but not anymore. Sorry, you're gonna have to wait until your mem kit comes in.
