I have an AGP Radeon X1600 Pro 512, which won't be replaced so don't even suggest it. Old 17" CRT is going out and I want to get a replacement LCD. This system (old Athlon XP 2800+, 1.5GB RAM) will be going to my 9 yr old in a couple months, when I build a new system for me.

My question is, I see 17" LCD's running rez of 1280x1024 for about $180. If I get a monitor such as that for this system now, will the x1600 handle that rez playing BF2142 and would it be playable for a couple months? If not, can I run a non-native 1024x768 on such an LCD or would it look strange or damage the monitor? Later on when my kid gets it, 1280x1024 will be fine for the lesser performance needed by her programs. Thanks!

I don't think nan X1600 PRO will run BF2 at that resolution with high details, but if you lowered the detail you might get it playable.

1024x768 wouldn't look bad on a higher-res monitor, at least it's never bothered me.

Okay, thanks Cleeve. As long as I can limp along until May-June that would be fine. I just didn't want to hurt a new monitor by running it at a resolution it wasn't designed for.

it can't hurt the monitor. The only issue is that the monitor will have to upsample the 1024x768 image the video card sends it, this isn't hard on it but it's not quite as pretty as running it at the LCD's native resolution, that's all.

my 6600GT AGP ran BF2 on high at 1024x768? (P4 2600/1gb)
