Was this an upgrade?

Is my new choice in graphics card worthy of the word ''upgrade'' ? [from Radeon 9800PRO (128) to GeF

I wait 8 months to ask this question >,> man I'm lame.

I had an ATi Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB) AGP...

it was running in my

DFI LANParty UT 250Gb (754)
AMD64 3200+
1.5GB Kingston ValueRAM
[new video card here]
WD 74.4GB Raptor (8MB Cache)
WD 250GB HDD
SoundBlaster Audigy 2
Sony DRU-710A DVDRW

I 'upgraded' to an eVGA 7600GS... I never really paid attention to my FPS in game (UT2K4, Age of Empires III demo, Age of Mythology, The Sims 2, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, Caesar 3, Guild Wars, Maple Story)... but now I'm curious to know if this was a worthwhile upgrade...?

it gave me DX9.0c compatibility, so AoE3 should run better... but i haven't even tried it yet LOL... I've been too stuck in UT2K4 and Maple Story... number wise, was this a worthwhile upgrade? :)

- Cheers

I'd imagine overall it's an upgrade, though not a big one. There might still be a few situations in which your old card would perform better, but overall I'd think the 7600GS would outperform the 9800Pro.

If there is ANY doubt in your mind after you upgrade whether it was worth it... odds are it wasn't. I went from an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro to an Nvidia 7800 GTX... and from a P4 1.5 to an AMD X2-4400... and believe me, when I loaded games I knew that I'd made an upgrade.

think about it this way, its 2 generations ahead of the 9800pro, 2 generations is usually a major upgrade, performance wise it might not be noticeable since all those games are older and dont require much in terms of a graphics card. You could probably run most of those games on a high end geforce 4.

Yes, it's two generations ahead, but in terms of performance it's not... that 9800 was head of its class... a 7600 GS is most definitely not a top-performing 7000 series card. I just don't think that's a big enough upgrade to justify the cost of the new card... if if was a freebie, sure... but dropping $100-$150 on that card just doesn't make sense for such a modest performance boost.

Generations don't mean all that much. A Radeon 9800 PRO will probably beat an X1300, which is two gens ahead. And a 9800 will destroy a 7200.

Like rodney said, you're talking the top of one generation (9800) vs the middle-bottom end of the other (7600 GS).

It's an upgrade, but like me moving from the plane geforce 6600 to an x700 pro card, the difference isn't that great (although the jump from DirectX 9.0b to 9.0c makes a bigger difference than mine did--I went backwards!)

Here's a B-I-G upgrade :I have a friend who went from integrated geforce 4 graphics on a 4 year old HP to a 7600gs (tax returns..)

Let me tell ya'...That's a big upgrade right there.....

Also, I went from an mx420 on my ol' dell (before I built my custom) to an x800gto and got the extra 4 pipelines....However, it was not free...
