If you have a newer dolby digital receiver then it probably has an automatic
feature that switches between Dolby digital and analog for a given input.
For example: I have a HD cable box that I have hooked up to my receiver with
both a PCM (Digital) and the standard stereo input jacks. When I change to
a digital or HD channel and Dolby digital is active the receiver switches to
that input. When on an analog channel and the digital is turned off it
changes to the analog input automatically.

This does not happen when I have my TV hooked to the same inputs. What is
required for the automatic switching. I tried removing the PCM link and it
still didn't automatically switch to analog input. What has the Cable box
company done right that the TV company didn't do?

I have the same dilema. On my Yamaha receiver, I have a digital optical
input in the "TV" input, and also the standard right/left audio cables on
the "TV" input. If I want to listen to the standard audio cables, I need to
press the "TV" button on the receiver's remote. It toggles through Auto,
DTS, and Analog. When it gets to analog, the stereo signal can come
through. I think with the digital connector in there, my satellite box even
being turned off, there is something in the receiver that senses this and
doesn't want to switch over to the old stereo inputs.
