Purchase and install the latest version of Microsoft Works.

Microsoft Works Suite 2005 (also includes Microsoft Word)
http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22&pcid=88ef866c-23d8-4105-b196-a3d05a8f7234&type=ovr

($99.95 - $20.00 rebate = $79.95) (excellent value)

Maybe I was just lucky but my Works 4 from 1997 loads and runs fine on both
a Home and Pro version of XP.
They were installed pre SP1 and have lived through both updates to SP2.

I have installed Microsoft Works many times on Windows XP systems
without problems, and some of the versions were much older than 1999.
One recent customer wanted her Microsoft Works version 2 (for Windows
3.1) installed on her new XP machine and that worked.

So there is something else amiss here. What exactly happens when your
friend tries to install Works 99 on her computer? What error messages
etc. are produced?

Good luck
