Thats certainly good news, since i plan to get another 8800 later for SLI and the PSU i'm planning to get, OCZ Game Xstream 850W, only has 2 PCI-E connectors so it should be enough for both cards. Thank you for your help.
i hope you dont mind me giving you a suggestion, y dont you just spend more on the GTX (edit: i mean GTS)now, and down the road just a new, better, graphics card. That would give you better performance for a longer period of time. But thats just how i feel bout it.
Anyways, even IF it needed 4, the GPU's come with molex to PCI-E adapters so it wouldnt be a problem.
Well the problem is that a significant leap over the GTX won't come until at least the fall IMO. And so if games like Crysis come out prior to the 65nm refreshes, then adding another cheap GTS-640 will give him some more grunt to take him into that next generation and likely for not much more than going with a GTX from the start. I'm not a fan of SLi, but for a LONG TERM strategy it's a nice security valve in case the single card struggles. 2 GTSs in SLi are more powerful than a single GTX in demanding apps (of course iwth more power consumption too), and unfortunately the GTX prices aren't droping yet, so if the guy is price concious and is fine with the gaming level of a single GTS now, then adding another later for something like Crysis is a good play because maybe it's not needed, but if it is, and there's no significant improvement in the G80 line or R600s then then end result is the same as paying more for a GTX now, or even an overclocked refresh (but no new fab) of the GTX.
No one knows the future, but this isn't a bad play if you don't expect a major jump in performance in the next 6 months, just a refresh jump similar to the 7950/x1950 style bump.
Im also not a really big fan of SLI, but if the OP doesnt mind playing at a little lower settings for a while, he can just a get new graphics card later on, but not one of the refreshes. So mabe a yr to two with the 8800gts and then a new one. Thats how I would spend my money.
But anyways, im pretty biased, haha
I was also curious, timehopper, what resolutions do you play at?
Well, I didn't think my question would start this discussion, but unfortunately i just don't have the money for a GTX right now. I already spent a lot on the components for my first build and i just picked up that OCZ 850W PSU, because Newegg offered a MIR, and an eVGA 8800 GTS for $359 after a MIR yesterday. In any case, using 2 8800 GTS in SLI is just one of my options for the future and i want to be ready for it. I also may get a single 8900 card when they come out instead, i just dont know. But i figured, getting another 8800 may be a cheaper way to enhance gaming performance, surely by then they will drop in price, that's my way of thinking anyway. To answer the question about resolutions, i usually like to play in higher resolutions if i game allows it, most of my older games i play in 1600x1200 or lower. The computer i have right now is old, so i don't have any newer games since it will not run them, that's why i'm building a new computer so i can play newer games as well.
