dont for socket 939, if you like amd, design a system around am2, but you will need ddr2 memory. do you have to have a blue ray disc burner, those are way to expensive. another note, a core 2 duo system will out perform any amd system (but thats up to you). good choice of video card. do you plan on buying a hard drive, psu, and case?

First, go through these benchmarks & decide on the cpu. s939 FX-60 X2 is just below AM2 5000+ X2 in 3D Max. FX60 costs $370-400 whereas 5000+ is $215. The Intel C2D e6400 is just below FX60 in 3d Max. 6400 retails for $220. When overclocked, the 6400 will wipe the floor with any of above.

After you decide on the cpu, we'll talk about mobos.

Get a dvd burner for now & wait for HD-DVD/BD hybrid drives. LG just released the hybrid standalone player.

Well, if you're getting Vista, might as well get a 8800 gpu or wait for R600 in june maybe.

If it weren't for Vista then I would say go with Sapphire x1950 xt 256 mb, but I read some were that the new CCC for vista doesn't have support for the x1950xt. I agree with drummerdude that you would be better off with AM2, it will give a better option for upgrade to the AMD quad core, which may be better in your case. Plus the Higher speeds with the DDR2 might help too.
