Faster - Opterons or x2?

I'm looking to upgrade before Skt 939 is obsolete, and was wondering which is faster? I can't seem to find data on opteron processors and their speeds compared to x2 & E6600's.

I was considering either the x2 4800 Toledo, or Opteron 170/175.

Well, I just read the thread, or poll regarding the Opty's versus x2. It looks as if the Opty's are preferred over the x2. I'm not a big OC'er, and not sure that'll factor into my decision? Although, I'd like to give a try sometime.

Anyway, I'd like to upgrade my cpu (opty 170?) and my graphics card (x1950xt) for a minimal cost upgrade on my 939 platform.

Most people will suggest to get an Opty because it usually has better overclock potential (not insane difference or anything) than X2. Other than that, just get an X2.

Opteron does have a slightly better reputation overclocking, but at New Egg today, the 2.0 gigahertz opty 170 is $70 more than the 2.0 gigahertz X2 3800. Not much performance difference for the price and both can be overclocked. I have an opty 165 at 2.6 on standard voltage, up from 1.8, so they do overclock well.

Yeah, whichever is cheaper. Even if you do decide to give overclocking a whirl, the 4800+ will still be fun for you. GL :)
